The Lenovo and HP Ryzen laptops suffer from significant throttling under load and thereafter until restarted. So does the Acer Aspire. Check reviews before you buy to make sure you're happy with the limitations (search 'Ryzen mxfr'). I confess that I don't fully understand it myself, but it seems to worry people in other Ryzen laptop threads.

The HP from AO at £429 is a slightly better buy. You can get another tenner off that by using code GUARDIAN10. This link describes the throttling issue mentioned above, and states that the HP suffers less from it. It also has a much better battery life. notebookcheck.net/Len…tml

The HP is a fine deal, but I would go for a bigger screen for home use mainly.
Also, the Lenovo has better build quality and sturdier metal top chassis, thin bezel and USB Type C port.

The laptop at currys only has 4gb of ram and the intel onboard graphics won’t be comparable to the AMD graphics, so I’d say the AO laptop is worth £20 or £30 more, yes. Don’t forget, if you’re looking for a bargain by gauging how much the price has reduced by, the laptop at AO dropped to £449 on Black Friday and stayed at that price. All the other vendors probably put their price up again straight after, so that they could show a £100-200 reduction on Boxing Day, whereas AO are only showing a further £20 off.
I’m not biased, I just put my money where my mouth is after doing a bit of research over the last few days.

Make sure you check the HP laptop when you receive it, some have bad quality finish on the casing.

I think the hp mentioned in that review is an Intel based one, not the Ryzen model ao are selling. Of the hp Ryzen range, only the hp x360 seems to avoid the throttling issue. So do the E485, E585, Swift 3 and Matebook D from their respective manufacturers.

Thanks for letting me know ordered now look forward to it😁
How difficult can it be to find a 15" laptop with a backlit kbd and a half decent graphic card. I ordered this laptop from Argos, and sent it back. The fan sounded like an aircraft taking off.

The HP in the link is a different model. I avoided the HP because of concerns about the throttling which had been highlighted on a 15.6" version. Seems like a wise move according to this member..

Got it from ebay, with ebay coupon for £350. What a waste of money - thermo throttling all the time, hardly going above 1.6GHz if under any load. Noisy fan, plus some issues with displaying some windows in native resolution. I'd accept it for £250-£300 not for £400

It would seem to be an issue with how certain manufacturers integrate it into their machines. I don't know if Lenovo have sorted it, but it would seem that HP haven't. Certainly seems like a lottery as far as the HP goes..

One from AO suffers as hell - tested it myself. I thought I got a real steal, when I got it for £350 (with ebay voucher), I like the design, everything looked very well (for this price tag) until I tried to stress it a bit - throttles to 1.6GHz! Well below 2GHz advertised. And temps were not too bad at all, so either limitation in BIOS or poor PSU, did not really test it. Fantastic CPU wasted in poor HP/Lenovo execution. Steer clear from them unless you need it just for web browsing.

After getting my hands on HP, i did some research online - Lenovo is not any better. I'd go with higher spec laptop from Dell BUT they do not do AMD :/. Anyway - with Ryzen 3000 on horizon, I'd expect prices to drop.

Head's up - just tried buying it and I couldn't proceed to the checkout. It came up with the following message:

"com.digitalriver.inventory.InventoryException: Were sorry. The product could not be found with supplied information, please contact our sales team on 0203 0140783 for assistance with your order !"

That number is no longer in service...
