Once you've discovered SSD....there's no going back

I was planning to install my M.2 NVME today. It's been sitting in a little foil antistatic package thingy for oh ,let's say 8 months.

I should really plan my purchases more better.

There was an AMD A5 8//1TB here a couple of days ago for around £220

Happy with those storage and memory specs but not really happy with the processors. I would be looking for 8 cores / 16 threads / full HD / USB-C /./ AMD Ryzen / IPS or QLED for my money.

2.5" SATA internal expansion bay would be nice too.

And the wait goes on.

Oooooo the second one but bear in mind it's 8 thread. Will still be wicked fast (using an AMD 1700 R7 here - 2017 link). It would be nice to get 512 or 1TB SSD Storage too for you, but depends if it's just 'office work'.

Wicked fast is a slight overstatement. It's a mobile CPU with built in GPU. It will handle stuff fine for the most part

Yes, but if buying now, might as well get an i5 8th gen or Ryzen 5 or above as they’ve be mainstream - they will be plenty quick enough. Whatever people buy though, make sure it has an SSD or have one to fit - that 1TB hard disk in this needs to go straight into an external case!

Which is better? This one or HP …Which is better? This one or HP 255https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-255-g7ryzen-3-2200u8gb-256gbhd156in-win10-pro-laptop-for-31199-with-code-delivered-at-ebuyerebay-3309367

This one as it’s better built and has the i5 quad-core (both HD displays), it just needs an SSD. The 255 is not very well built and only Ryzen 3, which is ‘ok’ but miles off the Ryzen 5 or i5.

Yes you’re right, sorry I’ll correct that. I skim read it and saw UHD below - also usually this model has a full HD display. I’d still recommend it over the HP 255 all the same.
Lenovo specs state :

Memory
4 GB onboard DDR4 + 8 GB SODIMM
4 GB onboard DDR4 + 4 GB SODIMM
4 GB onboard DDR4 + 2 GB SODIMM
4 GB onboard DDR4
16 GB Intel® Optane™ (optional)

static.lenovo.com/sho…pdf

So if you've gone for this, it's highly likely that you can swap out the supplemental 4GB SODIMM.
Adding a SATA SSD or SSHD would round this laptop off quite nicely for most use cases.

4GB Soldered + 4GB DIMM DDR4-2400

so yes you can replace the DIMM but then it will not be a matched system so memory will be slow

HP 255 better deal I think

I reckon it should be more than ok for general use.

Battery life might need some investigating though, bearing in mind lecture theatres and lack of power points.

Screen resolution is ok but not brilliant, it's the laptop equivalent of a HD ready TV (720p) screen vs other 4k HDR displays.
The resolution is on a 15" display - won't be ideal for delicate details as the pixels that close up may be noticeable, pop into a Currys to see what it looks like up close.

How does this compare to the one below (Ryzen 5 it says), any positives like display, battery, process speed?

No Ethernet is a bummer.

Didn't even spot that. Good shout.

USB to ethernet adapter ought to cover it though. Not as good as pure ethernet, but better than relying on WiFi.

Hackintosh laptop!
30wh battery that's a yikes from me
I've still got my£30 Fujitsu Siemens laptop with 1.5 GHz CPU and 2.5 GB ram and win XP!
My favourite laptop. I think this has 1 x Thunderbolt 3 right? If it’s the same one I had it was amazing. I connected her up to a 1080ti via Razer Core X GPU and was playing Oculus games with no lag!

very useful video that confirms some of the answers to the questions raised earlier.

Even though I don't really need it, I might get one and mack a Hackintosh of my own.

eBuyer increased the price, they've done that on the other laptops as well. Was going to buy one but refused to do so on principles alone [although to be honest it would have been a buy that I didn't need .. I will wait for black friday .. white monday ... or xmas day hoping the other half loves me 3000 ..500 will do actually]
I prefer sdd, much faster in shut down, start up and process info and has the latest usb, with 20% go and have fun
