Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (14) Intel | 14" powerful and affordable laptop | Lenovo UK

TechRadar Verdict

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14-inch is a light and sturdy laptop with a great keyboard, good performance, and long battery life. All this makes it a great choice for students and other people who want a good work laptop that doesn't cost a fortune, and even though the low contrast screen, the small touchpad, and the lack of extra USB C ports leave something to be desired, it still gives you a lot for your money.

Sticky notes are dead. The IdeaPad 5's webcam privacy shutter provides a physical barrier between your world and creepy hackers. And with a fingerprint reader on the power button, you can set your IdeaPad to not even wake up unless it detects your biometric signature.

Edgy visuals
We designed the displays on the IdeaPad 5 to pack as much screen space into the surface area as possible, pushing visuals to the edge and giving you a viewing experience that feels bigger. We call this Active Area Ratio, or the amount of screen compared to the size of the surrounding borders, and the IdeaPad 5 has an incredible 90% Active Area Ratio.

Classy to the touch
Why just get a laptop, when you can show off a fashion accessory? The IdeaPad 5 was built with a new level of attention to detail, making this machine soft and comfortable to the touch with a durable paint that creates a fabric-like feel on the surface.

Options galore
The IdeaPad 5 comes with a host of options including a USB-C port with power delivery that replaces the typical power supply jack or can be used to plug into an extra display. Quick Charging gets your battery back up to the green in minutes. And with speedy SSD drives, and bountiful memory options, this PC is more than just an everyday laptop.

I don't think that word means what you think it means "Powerful"

11th Gen i3, 4 GB DDR4 RAM (soldered, non-upgradeable), 1080p TN screen, 128GB NVME SSD (user replaceable). If you listen really carefully you can hear it saying "When I grow up I want to be a Chromebook"

EDIT: You can get the IdeaPad Flex 5i 2-in-1 Chromebook from Curry's with same processor, ram and storage and a 1080p IPS Touchscreen for £299. Worth the extra for the better screen and 360° functionality IMHO. (edited)

It’s actually a good price for a basic PC. The CPU is ok for web browsing and office apps.
The only real let down is the 4gb RAM (which you can’t upgrade in this particular model).

As long as you are doing basic tasks and don’t keep loads of web browser windows open (I tend not to, but I know many people do) it could be alright for you.

I’d expect a TN screen for this price, although TN screens are not that great, it I’d Full HD and it will do.

It won’t play recent games unless you use a cloud streaming service such as Gamepass or Google Stadia.
Although you can just about manage to play the likes of FIFA, League of Legends and Fortnight at 720p on the lowest settings.

When you set up these for the first time it usually asks you if you want to install S mode or use standard windows. S mode limits you to installing apps from the Microsoft store. S may suit those not really knowing much about PCs and those more cautious about security….. although many will say Windows is spying on you anyway (much as Chrome or Apple OS does too).

Although if you can stretch for the HP with Ryzen 5500u and 8Gb RAM for £339 on another post, you would be better off all round. It can even play most modern games at 720p low/medium settings if 30fps is ok with you. (edited)

Are you suggesting people go for the Ryzen 5500u processor over the i3 on this laptop? Is that not a downgrade?

    Powerful?

    False advertising

4GB RAM and a TN screen is a bit naff. Shame as it's a good price for an up to date CPU.

    its £260?

    Powerful. No.

    Affordable. Maybe.

    “Powerful”

I mean. I guess it literally consumes power from the wall, so it’s not totally misleading

Refurb aspire 5 about 10 deals below this is much better imho

Put Linux or Chrome OS Flex on it and it will fly.

Just buy a Chromebook with this spec that is designed for it tbh.

Shame about the ram. But the price point is great. Should be able to do all the things a student needs to do and it wouldn't be the end of the world if the laptop got lost/broken etc. Also, have the option of using other operating systems. If only they let you upgrade the RAM.
    Avatar
Not just the ram is the problem. The storage as well. Windows always eats up a lot.

Hardly "powerful". There are multiple deals on that provide significantly better value in this bracket. I would argue that this is probably £100 too expensive.
    Avatar
Not an intel processor and no windows I guess?
  12. Avatar
A more descriiptive title (cpu,. Memory, storage size) would improve this deal
  13. Avatar
    TN panel
    45% colour accuracy
    250 nits brightness

I'd pass on this poor screen

48169998-p5RX8.jpg48169998-GXN8b.jpgAs for powerful.. if it was 12th gen i3 with its 4 extra mini cores then it would be better.

Currya do actually sell a 12th gen i3 15" lenovo laptop now for £299.. according to crucial I believe ram is upgradable from 4gb also. But someone needs to confirm this (edited)
