LENOVO IdeaPad 510 FULL HD - £299 @ PC World / Currys

Seen this on the PC World website looking for a cheap laptop for the daughter for christmas. Not sure about reviews, but likely to be the cheapest full HD screen at this price I'm thinking. Tempted to jump on this even if at the top end of my budget. But slightly concerned on just the 4gb ram and Lenovo as a brand. Either this or hold out for a better brand with more ram even if just 720 hd?.

I see fhd and I give heat

FHD IPS. Wow. I have to take a look. Will report back with my findings.

@dave99461 Regarding RAM

4 GB DDR4 (12 GB maximum installable RAM)

Yeah, but does this laptop carry 2 ram slots (as to add an additional 4gb stick) or just the single slot I'm wandering?. As struggling to find out as far to many variants of model. But as upto 12gb ram, is it fair to assume 2 ram slots than just 1 to save binning the 4gb just to add 8gb?.

Reviews seem to suggest the screen in these 500 series machines have poor colour reproduction covering only 60% of the srgb colourspace. Realistically this will mean muted colours.

It says up to 12GB so that would mean 2 slots.

I have the Lenovo 500s i5 13.3'' version, the IPS panel is excellent.

does anyone know if this would run the sims 4 well?

I bought this a few weeks back. It's a nice little laptop. Fairly thin and nicely built for a budget laptop. Backlit keyboard is a nice touch. The screen seems fine. No competition for a MacBook retina but good enough. Colours look vibrant enough, not like those smokey looking screens on the £200 laptops. I'm pleased overall. It's the nicest looking laptop I've seen in the price range. I spent a day working on it on a business trip and it was perfectly acceptable.

I have no clue about sims but no it's not a gaming machine. According to min requirements for sims it would run but I doubt it would be a very nice experience.

In thinking about my daughters iPad\pc habits which includes a lot of YouTube viewing, and as it seems certain to have a spare ram slot to add to than replace I think we will go for this as she will benefit more from the full HD screen for watching videos than a better known brand lower hd screen. As doubt we will find another full hd screen at this price any time soon. Plus IPS screens are generally better than TN screen I gather even if the above is suggesting slightly otherwise.

Medium settings should be realistic, though you may have to lower the resolution if it feels sluggish.
Alternatively you could start at 1080p on low then gradually increase each graphic setting.

As long as this will play the games on Facebook and flash based games with no issues my daughter would be happy I guess. Though she is asking for Minecraft for which slightly unsure on if it will run on this laptop?.

Minecraft will run on the iGPU. Perhaps not at native resolution or max details. Turn down the settings and it'll run fine.

Here's a review of the i5 CPU based model via NotebookCheck - added it in, to help give other members an idea on what your getting (minus the i5 CPU of course!) with regards to base specs, ports and maintenance access along with testing that NotebookCheck have carried out.

what about graphic card?

If it doesn't say it has a GPU then it doesn't have a GPU.

Which it doesn't.

Laptops have been posted within the past week which have an i5 for roughly the same price. Seems like it's getting heat just for the resolution. The important thing with the screen is colour accuracy, not necessarily the resolution. A 700p laptop with better colours will look far better than a 4k with low colours.

It's an IPS panel, which should be pretty much a guarantee to have a much superior colour reproduction and viewing angle compared to TN panels. You'll be hard pushed to find a better spec screen at this price, unless looking at under powered windows tablet hybrid thingimys.

Have you checked the benchmark of this i3? It has a benchmark of 3800 almost equal to that of my gen4 i7 of 3900. It is a more than capable cpu. The ram can be upgraded and it has a 1tb hdd. With a FHD screen on top, this is a great deal and would like to see other laptop examples that people think beat this deal. Stick in an SSD and it will be an excellent spec machine.

If you want amazing/vivid colour reproduction you shouldn't be buying anything at this price point.

Heat from me.

Heads up for any one wondering about the RAM - this has only 1 slot and a max of 8GB.

I'm happy to be proven wrong but I got this from the hardware manual - page 26 (link below). I bought this but am most likely it to take it back unopened as the reviews on the Curys site for it, though not many, aren't great re speed. Got me worried, so did the research. Seems you have to take out the 4GB, put in 8GB...that's another £40 odd quid...

However 4gb with Windows 10 is plenty for everyday use. Windows 10 works great with 2gb as per all the tablets that have been released of which I have one and can say runs very well indeed.

So yes 8gb is going to cost but you will only need to do this if you want to do more with this laptop than general every day use.

bought my son a lenovo 3 years ago, would not boot up after first week replacement sent, then second one broke down and would not system recover with onetouch key,, poor customer service,, would send out recovery dvd for £37 postage,, no thanks

bought one of these last month, screen is excellent. Added an SSD and 8Gb of memory (12Gb total) and impressed with the performance

Well, I did say I'm happy to be proved wrong!
Thank you - I'll consider keeping this now as discount will pay for the extra RAM. I did like the screen when I saw it - good viewing angles and it has quite good brightness.

700p laptops are horrible for productivity, plus this laptop has an IPS screen which will be much nicer for media consumption, even before you consider the higher resolution.

Buy gift cards from Morrissons, whould get £5 voucher every £100 spent so extra £15 in vouchers if they still on offer.

just popped the back off mine and it has a ram slot with nothing in it. Not sure where the 4gb is.

Sounds like the 4gb is hard soldered then which explains the maximum of 12gb.

12GB will be plenty at this performance level. It's a non issue.

I think I'll pick one up tomorrow.

If it's anything like their Thinkpad range it will be conveniently located on the opposite side of the motherboard under the keyboard and require the machine to be taken practically to pieces.

From the review posted earlier, here is a shot of the underside. Looks like there is no replaceable battery either.

Yes it will. Wifes 4th gen i5 does a decent job at the native 720p res on her laptop. It runs surprisingly well on low end hardware.

Realise this is probably a stupid question, but I currently have a 2nd gen i5 laptop which, to me at least, seems to run pretty well. Am I likely to see any improvement with this?

Speed wise no.

I'm in the market for an upgrade & this caught my eye until I read the site reviews, some favourable but many unfavourable, more than the norm saying its slow which confuses me when the processor registers a benchmark about 4 times the one in my budget friendly Toshiba Laptop. Can some offer some guidance here, is it possible that a laptop with a powerful processor can still be very slow for some other reason?

EDIT

Could Bloatware slow down a model like this or the full HD screen?

I'm guessing your i5 will be the same speed or even slightly faster than this. There are many 2nd gen i5s even one which runs at 1.4ghz so can't really say. If your machine is in good order, you may be better off with an ssd and a reinstall. This could make a huge difference.

bought a lesser version of the ideapad from currys using discounted giftcards bought through work and took it back, hopelessly slow and you couldn't actually take the thing apart easily. Currys refunded back to the giftcards. I have a thinkpad for work and gone through 2 of those in the last 6 months, was tempted to go for this but does worry me about the build quality and comments on here and other places. It is a big jump up in price to Dell or HP but they to have their own issues, decisions decisions.
