Take note the keyboards are riveted in so over £200 should it need repairing as it involves a complete teardown to access it

Lenovo IdeaPad 520s
Intel Core i5-7200U Dual Core Processor
14" Full HD IPS Screen
Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
8GB DDR4 RAM
128GB M.2 SSD
Integrated Intel HD 620 Graphics

That's probably my perfect spec to replace my current 14" i5 4200 laptop. Enough power to do most tasks I'd say
Between the Windows OS and backup files you aren't going to have a lot of room left on that 128GB drive. Something to bear in mind if you have lots of files - photos, video, etc - that you wish to store on this.
Does Box have any physical stores? John Lewis wouldn't price match the Amazon Echo recently for me for that reason.

Yeah, I've had this in the past...
Wouldn't it be better to go for something with i3 8th gen?

I would say they're fairly comparable. But it just depends on the deal doesn't it?
It's not better to go for an 8th gen i3 because for a low power laptop like this one, the i3 would still be only 2 cores.

I got price matched by John Lewis for it. They have a store somewhere
Is it worth paying the extra £100 for the Acer Swift 3? It has 8th gen and a bigger SSD but I don’t think it’s M.2, does that make much of a difference?

Yes Box has a physical store near Castle Vale, Birmingham as bought a few things from their store in the past.

Possibly, but it's an extra £150 which is quite a difference. I also like the look of the Swift but I'm not sure about the cost.
Looks pretty good -
Will it be a massive upgrade to our old laptop (which still works, and specs below) but we need two in our household now.

XPS 15
2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor (2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz), English Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)

The 2670qm is faster than this 7200u
Looks like a great deal.

Exactly. Their new Ideapads have a terrible internal design, I now have to use an external keyboard with mine since a key stopped working

Isn't that the i5-7200U processor also dual core?
looks pretty decent for a light use machine. I looked at one in costco and was quite impressed with the build quality. JLknocked me back a couple of times if i couldn't show retailer had physical store.

Correct - they have a showroom so John Lewis should price match. I never knew about this - thanks OP. It's on their website:

Is it easy to upgrade from 128GB SSD to a higher 256 or 512SSD?
And will it be expensive?

Did John Lewis sell it to you for £400 then?

That's a real shame. Even on my Thinkpad, I should be on my 3rd keyboard after two failures. Good that I can replace. Puts me off a lot of machines. We got an Acer Chromebook at a low price, and I'm not that sure that much of that is replaceable. Just had to swallow the fact and hope we'll get about two years out of it.

I had a look at a YouTube video for the Lenovo 520 and it looked really difficult. The whole back needs to come off.
Apple is twice as expensive, and the processor twice less powerful, but it's still a better machine with better support.

For the reasons mentioned, this is a cold deal. Voted as such..

Kindest regards

Its a good price for this spec for a very well made laptop.

You tube video on replacing the keyboards does not seem to be as difficult as you lot are making out unless the process is different fror this model.

Did you watch that video? The keyboard is underneath everything so needs everything removed first, then the rivets hacked off and a new keyboard riveted in. Replacing the screen is a nightmare too,

The video doesn't show keyboard replacement. If the procedure is that as outlined here by @chocci, that's a real bummer.

Streaming what? As a video client for something like Netflix it should be more than fine. The IPS screen should also give you a wider angle to watch if there's more than one of you viewing.
