Been waiting for it to come back down

AMD Ryzen 5

What is RAM?
RAM (Random Access Memory) is different to the permanent storage provided by hard disk drives (HDD), solid state drives (SSD) or memory cards in your equipment. RAM is used by your device to temporarily store data to carry out everyday operations. The more RAM your machine has, the faster you can expect it to open and run programs.

A solid performer
Featuring 8GB of RAM, this computer has enough power for casual tasks like web browsing and word processing as well as more demanding jobs like complex spread sheets and image manipulation. You'll be able to run a healthy number of windows at once without any obvious lag or slowdown.

Solid State Drive
Solid State Drives (SSD) give you the capacity to store your documents and media, while ensuring quicker and reliable access to your files and programs. SSDs are far faster than regular hard drives and ingeniously, they don't use moving parts to work, which makes them far more dependable and also quieter.

AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics
AMD’s Radeon Vega 8 graphics processing unit (GPU) will enable you to enjoy a number of classic older games, along with some casual (web-based) gaming. You may be able to run more modern titles with reduced effects and frame rates.

Why buy AMD at this price point?

Because they are fantastic value?
muttyhc2k1109/02/2020 20:01

This or the hp one?

I would pick the S540. For better built quality and premium features, all Aluminium casing, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader and a glass covered trackpad. The speakers are top facing, which are better positioned for watching videos.

It’s been this price on JL for a while now. Decent deal though with the JL warranty.
It went down to this about a month ago, then they took the price up to 599, now it's just come down again

I've been watching haha!

Was this price before and it took me too long debating to get it so it has been at least a month since was back to £599.
One of the best prices for these specs and portability. I wanted this one but went back to 'full' price, got something else, otherwise I would have gone for it. Hot and it comes with longer warranty from JL.
Brought this last month form JL with 2 years warranty. Overall great laptop. Heat added.

This can't be right - surely a mistake on JL listing?

Don't think so. You get the choice when you boot he first time (so I've been told, just bought a different Lenovo and that's what I was told)

Why do you think that? It is indeed correct as is the fact you can easily disable it.

I bought it last week after delaying too long & missing the Lenovo offer of £432. Got this for £450 with some discounted vouchers through Giftcloud. It's quite impressive & the backlit keyboard is a boon (typing on it now). But the colour really is awful IMO & I'd much prefer the standard. Sadly JL only have the gold version.
Ah OK that's OK then - I have a friend getting it so didn't want to have badly advised!

So upon first booting it should ask them what Windows they want?

No, it will install as S mode by default. You then need to convert via the Microsoft Store.

support.microsoft.com/en-…ode

Another annoyance is MS have removed the ability to install without logging into an MS account. So if you want an account that doesn't require logging into MS, you have to use an account at installation, create a new account in the name you want & then delete the original.

In my case it's a benefit/perk for having a Scottish Friendly ISA.

As above, yes exact model & keyboard is backlit. Toggles between off & two levels of backlight.

Yeah this has put me off. I’ve bought something promised as copper before and it was definitely more rose than gold ! Even if it’s plain gold, stands out a bit much for my liking
My fiancée bought this last month and it really is a lot more premium in feel than the price would suggest. Very impressive for £480

What's the main concern about not using a local account? Privacy?
For those who own it how is the screen? Brightness and contrast? I know it ips but even with ips there some poor displays with average brightness and washed out colours.

I advocate using local accounts. I'm calling Microsofts bluff that I need their account to use Windows 10. I gave up using Hotmail and MS accounts when Gmail arrived.

Nobody should expect any privacy with W10.
Will this be compatible with a USB type c docking station?

Say one of these

Hi. Not got a clue about computers only really use for my invoices. Went to use mine last night and it said windows 7 is no good now and I have to get windows 10. I have a computer with a hard drive , not laptop. Would it be better for one of these as I could watch films on it whilst on planes or should I go for an Apple laptop. As you maybe have sussed I really have not got a clue about this sort of thing. Thanks
Oooooooh boy

Don't get an apple if all you want to do is watch films on planes. This laptop is overpowered for that tbh. You might find a tablet better.

Also, update your Windows 7 pc to 10. Loads of guides out there. Just Google it.

I had a Yoga with it but never used it, really don't see the point on a laptop. One downside to a touchscreen on Windows is that many sites will identify it's presence & assume you're using a tablet with no mouse. So mouseover function is disabled. So things like the option to view larger images on Ebay/Amazon are lost. I ended up disabling it on the Yoga because of this.

If her issue is with touchpads, & most are awful IME, then just get a small mouse to pair with it.

Seems fine to me but then that's coming from a particularly poor HP with a viewing angle of about 1 degree. I'm running it one notch up from minimum brightness so there should be no issues there. Don't use it for anything requiring accurate colour rendering so can't comment there.

Tbh the dell latitude I have is touchscreen I do use it occasionally but it does help at times as I don't always have a mouse on me. It's something that's not necessary with laptops tbh but I found it useful.
