This vs the s540 Ryzen 5 3500u, which sometimes comes down to this price too? Any pointers? I know this is supposed to have inferior build and a couple of features but are they a big deal?

The better CPU and larger SSD in this is tempting

IPS screen.

A deal breaker for some (including myself). Up to you of course.

The Ryzen 7 and ryzen 5 is not too far from each other too and the ryzen 5 version of this was £350 up to last week at Argos. Theyre still well built laptops though, but it won’t be a premium metal chassis.
Windows S onboard. So You have to pay

Lack of IPS screen (replying to original poster about what the difference between this one and the S540)
Ahh. That makes more sense.
The power cable is shocking short on this laptop - the 3 pin plug end is massive so if your intended socket is near the floor or a skirting board or you want to use it away from the socket in any difference you will need to put up with extension cables.

I sent another S340 back because of the poor design
Good deal but I'd wait till the 4th Gen Ryzen laptops launch.

In the next 2 months I believe. They're supposed to have much better performance at a lower TDP (so better battery life too).

Never heard that before, but I'm not saying you're wrong.
'Because it’s easy and free to leave S Mode, there’s no downside to buying a Windows 10 PC that comes with S Mode. Even if you don’t want S Mode, you can easily switch out of it.'
