What's wrong with 8gb of ram? Have Microsoft upped the minimum requirement overnight or something?

8gb is more than reasonable for most, my 3 years old laptop has only 4gb ram and is great. Off course, the more, the better. Also, it takes 5 minutes and 3 clicks to convert from Windows S to Win 10 Home.

Looks great.. but what is Windows 10 Starter?
EDIT: its "Windows 10 S" which is carp, but easily converted (for free) to Windows 10 Home.

Great specs, stick in another stick of ram and you'll be dandy!

Sorry if this is obvious but if it can be upgraded to w10 for free why don't they just install that to start with?
Not a bad deal.

The 14 inch S340 is pretty nice, but it’s a TN panel for anyone wanting to know.

You can also still buy the S340 15inch laptop a ryzen 5 version of this for £350 at Argos. There’s little difference between Ryzen 5 and 7 in the mobile u chip segment.

This "S" version restricts app installs to what you can get from the Windows Store. In theory, makes a laptop more secure.
Thanks OP - ordered!
TN = Cold for me.

Ah I see. But it's straightforward enough just to install the full version of w10?

If it is one stick then is in single channel. Two sticks is dual channel and is faster... Particularly for the gpu. So 2x4gb much better than 1x8gb. Saw a review of budget ryzen laptop and two memory sticks boosted game fps by around 60%

Is it just a Home upgrade? This article suggests you can upgrade to Pro?

I think the graphics card takes about 2gb leaving 5.x usable memory. Still works ok

Likewise I read ryzens more impacted by ram speed, and pc2400 or pc2666 , however when I looked this seems to affect desktops . As most laptops and ryzen mobiles gfx are loxked at 2400. Was going to replace memory ina friends with faster but after reading I don’t think it will make much difference . But being able to upgrade and add more , especially dual channel is good.

Depends whether the factory install is "Windows 10 S Home" or "Windows 10 S Pro"; gueessing its the former.
Hot, payed 455 last month
I have this laptop, bought it from currys last month for £460.

Can confirm RAM is perfectly sufficient although i've upgraded to 20gb now for about £45. If you want pro you have to pay an upgrade fee, but windows 10 home is fine anyway.

Can also confirm switching to windows 10 home takes a minute, if that.

Look at your commit charge in task manager. Windows never uses all of the ram in a system regardless if you have 1gb or 1tb. I never said you can't use a system with 8 or 4gb of ram - it just won't be as nice as a 16gb or 32gb.

At 8gb you hit the paging file often.

Windows s doesn't allow people to install apps outside of Microsoft store to avoid viruses. So useful for elderly ppl or younger kids.
I'd agree that you hit 8gb RAM more often than you might expect. Would always choose an upgradeable option where possible as RAM and SDDs are cheap (for now)

Don't know about Win 10 Pro, but for Win 10 Home it is straight forward. 3-4 click and takes a minute. Search on YouTube to see, it is really easy to do it.

Hi, I need some help here. I am on the market for a laptop for my girlfriend. Budget £400-£500.

I would be happy buying this one for myself, but since it is a present, apart from being good, I want it to look nice. So I am also considering the Lenovo ideapad S540-14API from John Lewis. I like the idea of the 2years JL warrantie, aluminium case...

In both cases I would upgrade the memory, the storage is OK, even if it's 256GB

I am not rushing, so I will be happy to consider some other options. Any advice?

Go for it. That would make a great present for her. It's a handsome/pretty looking laptop.
S540 is premium with backlit keyboard, Aluminium encased and has an quality display.
My guess is that, it would go out of stock soon, so it's best to decide now. You can leave it un-opened, return it if something else comes which I doubt.

S340 is lower range, and the TN screen on this is pretty damn awful.
