Remember, you can disable s mode and go into regular mode for free:

copied from MS’s site:
  • On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  • In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)
  • On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
This or s540 at John Lewis? This looks a cheaper build, correct?

Hence for me this is a cold deal.
But the price point doesn’t mean you *should* have feature X or Y. Some people will pay for this for the i7 badge, or because they’re connecting it to a projector or external monitor, so the processor or graphics makes more sense for them. Horses for courses
Cold from me.
Poor screen, low ram, fairly small SSD too.

Here's an Acer Aspire 5 for £100 more from Currys PC World Outlet eBay store.

-Slightly smaller screen but IPS display and Full HD
-I7 10th gen hex core processor. Benchmarks here for the 2 processors.
-Double the RAM (8gb)
-Double the SSD capacity (512gb)

Other features include part aluminium frame and fingerprint reader. Currently £749 (down from £849) at Currys PC World.

It does say refurbished but I got exactly the same spec machine with i7-8565u last week for £360. Showing absolutely no signs of use at all. Really happy with it, it actually feels better quality than my work laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T470s).
