TN screen kills it for me.

Is it really that noticeable on a 14 inch screen? Asking out of ignorance

They are the same really. When you have a TN screen and view off angle, it's the colours which totally wash out, significantly lowering the contrast. Not good for watching movies etc.

I might take the hit on the processor then in terms of trade offs for my price range...everything else being equal, would you rather a Ryzen 5 with an IPS display over a Ryzen 7 with a TN Panel?
Is it bad that it's Windows 10S?

For some, it won't be.
I guess. Cyber Monday has been a big disappointment

Agreed!

Fathers Day, Halloween, Black Friday, Cyber Monday...

What a terrible article. Removing Windows 10S is a no-cost option.

Yes Johnny, that's exactly what I'd do. The Ryzen 7 might be 20% faster than the 5. An IPS panel will be at least 100% better than a TN.

Ryzen 5 with IPS most definitely - there is practically no difference in performance between Ryzen 5 3500U and Ryzen 7 3700U. The Ryzen 5 3200U is quite a bit slower than both though. The only advantage to the Ryzen 7 3700U is that it has Vega 10 graphics instead of Vega 8 which means it will be marginally better at gaming, but both will blow Intel's integrated graphics out the water.

Is there a recommended alternative that ticks these boxes for a similar price?

I'm still looking! The Ideapad S540 does tick those boxes but it's a bit dearer than this:

lenovo.com/gb/…194

I think you can get it under £500 with Student Bean, but I'm waiting for it or a similar one to come down in price.

I went for this in the end

- 14 inch screen
- IPS display
- Relatively Thin and light
- Ryzen 5 3500u
- 512gb SSD
- 8gb RAM

Pretty good specs for £399

The zenbook 14. I bought this recently when the cashback offer was on and it’s very nicely built, premium slim and portable. But pricier but other premium zenbook go for 1400+

Ips screen was a must for me which is why I went for this.

Theres a HP laptop thats £430 (was £400 when on offer) that has a 14inch IPS screen, with 8gb ddr4 just like this one, but the hp one had 2x4gb so it utilizes dual channel plus it has 512gb nvme ssd which is more than 256gb plus faster also as it uses new tech. So for £100 less u get more and faster storage plus better ram configuration.

Specs and price wise that am was a very good deal. Unfortunately I bought mine before that deal came out.

I am happy with the zenbook tho, it’s lighter and definitely looks much better than theHP.
