looks a good alternative too the Acer Timelines, hot from me.

Looks nice

Possibly the most tempting laptop deal I have seen today but sadly it looks like it still isn't the one I'm after unfortunately.

My gf has this (but with better gfx card) and it is a really solid laptop. Hot!

Not a big fan of IBM but then I guess Lenovo bought IBM which dilutes the poor gene pool. Very similar to this saveonlaptops.co.uk/Ace…tml
but with a gig less ram. Personally I'd go for the Acer for a few quid more but, like I say, only because I've no respect for IBM. Realise I might be a mile off the mark with that statement but, hell, I'll say it anyway.

What do people think of the 4500MHD graphics on this, not much of a gamer myself but find that to play 1080p (HD content) stutter-free you need a pretty decent spec machine. Also, does it (or the Acer) output 1080p from the HDMI?

Good quality kit Lenovo, would take this over the Acer any day.

I must say that they have me tempted with this one at the moment.

Agreed - can't believe how many different types of processor there are today. Just bought a core i7 quad myself but wish I'd bought something cheaper.

Wow, I'm not in the market for anything that fancy unfortunately it's just that I hate my current laptop, even though many other people seem to love it, and I fancy one with a bigger screen and dedicated graphics so that I can at least play a couple of games and do my study on there.

I'm trying to keep myself under £400 at the moment if I can, but I've been tempted by the new Alienware models once or twice, I have to admit.

If it was a 15 inch screen I'd buy it.

if it had optical drive id buy it

If it had an optical drive it would be fatter and heavier though. Personally I never need an optical drive these days but if I did I would be happy with a cheap external.

same here, i need 1 with an optical drive too

Nice looking lappy. Really tempting, but I must learn to stop buying things I don't need.

I have an old Lenovo T61 and like a lot of Lenovo the build is very good. I have just been down PC World and had a look at loads of laptops, I was looking for a 15" laptop with really good battery life.

The build on Acer Timeline would be far to flimsy for myself, the screen is so thin, and flexes like anything. I would want to move mine around and use it a real laptop in a bag, the acer laptops would not take a good wack, this U350 is to small for my eyes.

Would it be built like my T61? as I have never seen one in flesh.

Thank you

In a word, no. Although Lenovo Ideapad's are built to better standard than Acer etc the Thinkpad T Series are in another league and last for years and years. You need a thinkpad T510 if you want the same kind of build quality as you're used to but with modern specs.

I have just looked into things a bit more as well and its bad news I think.

They are quoting 8 hours battery, but looking at the site http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/gbweb/LenovoPortal/en_GB/catalog.workflow:category.details?action=init&current-catalog-id=FD6DB49790C7411D933567FC361231FB&current-category-id=94CB96E6FEBF4D2693D4801CD10733E4 it says max running time with an 8 cell battery.

But the unit only comes with a 4 cell as standard (by the look of the manufactures site) ?

Does anyone remember what processor the CPW Asus UL30 had?

Is this one on bay better value ?
Similar spec, but with 3 year Dell warranty and a USB optical drive

I bought this:
saveonlaptops.co.uk/Ace…tml

It's a 14" lightweight laptop with 8 hour battery and has an internal DVD writer. only downside is it comes with Vista, but you can easily buy a £30 upgarde copy of Windows 7.

It's on at £319.00

Thats got even worse battery life, and I think if you want an ultra portable its a BIG factor, as an ultra portable will out and about.

You can get an 8 cell for the IdeaPad U350, but its big money. I reckon this one only comes with a 4 cell.

You can get one (refurb open box) from acer direct for £279! acerdirect.co.uk/GRA…gle

Looks like a good deal and tempting.... but I'd rather chew my hand off than buying a Lenovo laptop. I am cursed to use one at work (company supplier) and I hate it with all my heart. I am typing this on a cheapo Dell Vostro 1000 which feels 10 times more solid than my 'oh-so-good' Thinkpad T61, not to mention the better screen etc. Oh and it crashes less, has a much better WiFi reception... ok, I shut up now. Still, this one looks much better than the Thinkpads, I have to admit.
But I have to admit, the spec is hot for the price. But can't bring myself to push the 'hot' button, so I just don't vote

The 4801T is a solo core, it's slow!, the carphone warehouse one was a su2300 CPU which is dual core.

.

Oops, this lenovo is a fair price if the battery really can last upto 8 hours.

read my comments above... about the battery, they are talking max..... and that will be with an 8 cell that is big bucks and not on this one...

how do you know this comes with a 4 cell battery??,if it does surely its false advertising and very misleading.

The battery life is good. I haven't pushed it yet, but sitting down and browsing the web for 5 hours and I still had a couple of hours left on the battery.
For my needs it's perfect, web browsing, MS-office, watch movies.
There was an earlier post on HUKD about MS offering students a £30 upgrade (or full copy) to Windows 7. Only need a .ac.uk email address to buy online.

Ouch, tough call. I think the Asus UL30A (carphone spec now sold by aria) just takes it due to the battery. Both are a great option IMO:{
