Blimey, glad that's over! I had trouble getting the lid off thanks to nervous nelly syndrome. Maybe seeing the tricky part from inside will help someone else.

Basically it's an easy spudge most of the way round, but you spudge upwards underneath these vent bits rather than inwards. And you'll find it a lot easier with a stiff spudger than a wobbly one. My Ernie Ball nylons weren't really up to the job (too flexy) but Dunlop 0.73 or 1mm tortex were fine. Other guitar plectrums are available.

The RAM cover looks potentially complicated at first, but a gentle lever up from the side eases it up nicely.

41993268-MnMtX.jpg
The RAM fits easily, clicking reassuringly into place with clips either side.

41993268-xIUp7.jpg
The M.2 screw, however, nearly beat me, because it's a really tiny crosshead screw.

41993268-6FFcX.jpg

My cheapo jeweller's screwdriver bits weren't up to the job. I had to take a diamond plate to the smallest one to file it down a little and eventually succeeded in loosening the screw. But if I have a warranty claim and send it back minus the upgrades, unless the technician is reading the repair manual in brail, there will be no ignoring the abused screw head.

Oh well, c'est la tech vie.

41993268-xpvlM.jpg
I nearly forgot to refit the RAM cover before putting the lid back on for testing. It presses in very easily once lined up neatly and so does the back of the laptop.

Rebooting is always an anxious moment in any PC build work, but I did, no smoke came out (I have seem smoke on two memorable occasions in the distant past, and still bear the emotional scars!) and the Legion booted to desktop with no complaints. The M.2 drive had to be sorted out in disk manager, but so far, so good. No benchmark changes worth mentioning, but no errors either.

Right, that's it. I'm a bit annoyed that I talked myself into +1TB instead of +500GB, because 750GB would have been very, very workable, but I got weak and something unexpected ended up in the Amazon bagging area. Credit card bill will land in a few days... I'll face my buyer's remorse demons then.

Hope this helps someone. Oh, and if you have Vantage installed there's no point worrying about your warranty... Lenovo know your laptop's history quicker than you do. They'll either be ok with it, or they won't, but they'll definitely know. :-)

Edit: after filing my tiny screwdriver I cleaned it really well. You don't want metal filings in a laptop!

Thanks to everyone discussing the upgrade options/availability, you've helped sway me even though common sense says don't buy something which "immediately" needs a bump in RAM and storage. My idea of easy upgrade doesn't usually involve 11 screws and a guitar plectrum, especially under warranty (no matter how theoretically ok that might be!) but I've worked on my Y700 without killing it, so fingers crossed... very slowly, so as not to generate any static. ;-)

I imagine Black Friday this year could be something of a bargain-fest for those with cash and patience, but the Flash Crash + HUKD discounts put the 2060 within all too tempting reach, which is a good jump up from my 960M (1352 on 3DMark Timespy). Once I've conveniently forgotten about the extra cost of RAM and second drive (256GB soon got frustrating on this Y700) this should see me through the next few years very happily. Or at least until Black Friday when I see something better for less. ;-)

Of course the real reason I'm dipping into my precious savings is that this Lenovo Y700 is clearly worn out beyond all reasonable use. Diablo3 and Borderlands have, sadly, taken their toll. Rumours that I keep trying to give up gaming and concentrate on the guitar instead are, er... clearly wide of the mark. I blame it on Pong in black and white on a rented telly in the long lost 70s. The rot set in early!

Does it matter if I get a faster one.. would it throw a wobble because of the one which comes with it being slower?
Intel dropping their pants before the AMD 4800 models become more widely available and wipe these ones over the floor.

Its probably priced fairly at this price by comparision to those versions, because IF they were widely available, as they are about to be, this would be a "reasonable" price by comparision.

Top man pal.. bought 😃
Excellent deal. £50 cheaper than its ever been.

One previous poster on another thread said it was the 115W RTX2060 but I’ve not seen the source.

The only downer is the 256gb SSD. They could have chucked in a 512!

If you go to crucial website and enter model Lenovo Legion 5 15IMH05H it's under £30 for a 8GB stick. model CT8G4SFRA32A
The exact memory was SK Hynix HMA81GS6DJR8N-XN a single 8GB 3200Mhz stick running at 2933mhz. but this might change per batch of machine.

There are 11 screws on the bottom, longer ones at the back of the laptop and then you have to pop open the clips all round the back and sides, there is a tricky spot on each side just before the vent but just be gentle and take a minute, its really is not a problem. I just used my finger nails and started at the front. The ram is under the little square tin shield cover held by spring clips, again no problem and a nice design, just slots back on. There is an extra Nvme SSD slot and the screw is there to hold it. There are a few youtube videos showing it.

The SSD that ours came with was a Western Digital SN730 256GB which is a pretty good one.

Finally! I've been waiting for something to replace my delayed (months...) Ideapad with Ryzen 4800u.. This ticks all the boxes.
Finally, a decent 2060 deal
How's this one vs Honor Magicbook Pro?
Wowzers, this price for a 2060 is insane. This should get to be one of the hottest laptop deals of recent times.

Lenovo offer a similar Ryzen 4800H/RTX2060 but it's no where near this price and I'll bet won't be soon either.

For those interested ~20% performance gain for the Ryzen (similar scores for single core, easy win for multi-core).
Edited by: "adam.mt" 11th Sep
This is a no-brainer ... my credit card hates you all ;-)

Oh and I'll add ... £30 TCB, if they accept it.

That'll be the extra 8GB
Edited by: "yabbas" 12th Sep
The 3 year onsite warranty option and accidental damage cover is a good price too.

Yeah, agreed the price isn't close, it will be around £900 with discounts but it's much faster, uses less power and generates less heat.

My point was that this is a reasonable price given the competition now. I don't really see this as a great price as pretty much all Intel laptops are going to take a drop soon when the Ryzen chips become more generally available shortly.
