waaa I'm scared that it'll rewrite my DVDs

I guess 15.6" laptops are no longer the most portable kind, but I just can't get excited about laptops which only offer 2-3h battery times.

I would rather buy this one from them for the same price, due to a better processor.

But that is balanced out by the smaller hard drive and less RAM. I think the CPU in the OP is powerful enough for most peoples needs, however you could come into a problem with a small amount of RAM.

This is better spec for the same price; Asus consistently have the best failure rates in the industry: saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASU…tml

Its a lot cheaper to upgrade the RAM than the processor.

Guys is this worth the price? Need a laptop/netbook but I really, really don't have much money and need as much value for money as possible. I'm a university student but will do some light gaming and the usual YouTube videos, etc.

Help pls.

No good for any gaming really.

I can't see how this laptop is getting so much heat.

Why not just buy a core i3 laptop for an extra £10.

I can't think of a single reason to buy this laptop. Strictly speaking this laptop should be even cheaper, bearing in mind that the new core iX architecture is reaching the low price points.

Comparing this Lenovo - saveonlaptops.co.uk/Len…tml - to the Acer i3 - saveonlaptops.co.uk/eMa…tml

The advantages of the Lenovo are:
1) 3GB RAM versus 2GB
2) 320GB disk versus 160GB
3) has an anti-glare screen
4) 4 USB ports versus 3 (meh)
5) stated Bluetooth support
6) £10 cheaper
7) 7-in-1 card reader versus 2-in-1

The Acer "just" has a faster processor.

I'm looking to buy for my 13 year old - for homework, Facebook, browsing, (not 3D games) so I'm very interested in what people think of these models.

Couldn't resist the temptation to comment ... Why would one buy this laptop ?
For £279.00 you are getting
- Thinkpad build quality. It is indeed much better than rest of the other laptops.
(TBH I actually bought the 2 GB RAM offer for £249.00 and added 4GB on top for £37.80)
- Anti glare screen.
- eSATA port, HDMI port

The build quality is really pretty good and for this price it's an utter no brainer bargain.

I needed a second laptop to run Linux on and this is just perfect for that.

For gaming ? Stay away if you're in for gaming or heavy graphics workload.

My 2c.

You are missing two key features on the SL510 which are very attractive for small business users (Lenovo's positioning for this model) who holds data on an external disk (SQL database, Access database, Lotus Notes database) and musicians who holds large music samples etc.. :-
Expresscard slot which allows USB 3.0
eSATA port (one of USB 2.0 is combined USB 2/eSATA)

An I3-380M processor is double the CPU power but the weakness and the slowess link will be the disk I/O, especially disk I/O to exnetnal disks. But then again I3-380M + eSATA + Expresscard slot is a lot more money! So SL510 is a budget priced machine.
