We have a whole fleet of Lenovo laptops at work but T480 are the worst from recent models. The biggest problems being batteries. I'd certainly downgrade to a T470 or upgrade to T490. (edited)

Totally agreee, it’s a shame they discontinued the T series after the T490

    Doesn't get a great write-up here, though

Shame, would be good to hear some real-world opinions though, mainly interested in school work, office type of work, etc

They're testing the version with a dGPU, which power throttles the CPU earlier. The intel graphics version like this one is fine.

Tempted to buy a new gen ThinkPad the only thing that makes me worry is how fast they devalue because your up against companies who sell off laptops in thousands bringing the value down when it's time to sell

I wouldn't buy new, so many Ex-Corp's around as they are generally refreshed every 3 or so years by large companies. You can't buy standard Windows laptops with an eye on resale value as they just don't retain any value.

Either buy new with the intention of keeping long term or buy used and live with it being a couple generations old

I think the 8th Gen i5 is the sweetspot for used laptops, they are quad core and perform as well as the i7 but use less power and are also still supported by MS for Win11

Anyone know of a laptop similar or a bit more expensive with some sort of dedicated graphics capable of playing Roblox?, I mean this would probably run it, but it's wouldn't be the best. Would be grateful for any suggestions for my sons birthday.

Similar machine - E480 - has a dedicated RX550 graphics chip - very capable for basic gaming like roblox, rocket league, LoL etc - My son was very happy with it for a few years. He even managed to get Assassins' creed running at about 50FPS but that was on min graphics and was barely playable.
Not up to it for serious gaming - need to look around the £750 mark for something with a RTX3060 or better if you want to play teh later AAA games

Decent deal. Known issue with the thunderbolt on this model so recommended to update the firmware on it asap. (edited)

Personally, I'd hold out for a private seller. Obviously, your mileage may vary and you won't get a warranty from the seller but in the last month I've bought...

    1) ThinkPad E945 2020 - Ryzen 3 processor (bit slow) with 16GB RAM and added in a 256GB NVMe (in addition to the 1TB HDD) - mint condition for £150 all in.

    2) ThinkPad L390 - 8th Gen i5, 256GB NVMe and 8gb RAM. Cost £125, I'd say Grade B with some minor scuffs and small pressure mark. Might add another 8GB of RAM from CeX - this is my fave machine so far and was £125

    3) ThinkPad L13 with 10th Gen i5 - hasn't arrived yet but has 256GB NVMe and 8GB (soldered) RAM. Cost £175

The last 2 machines have back-lit keyboards and fingerprint readers. Not sure which I'll keep when I start my degree in February...

In any case, it's worth doing your homework as there's some real bargains out there from smaller and private sellers!

Out of interest, are you going to resell the ones you don't want or return them to the original seller?

I've never considered buying a few of something - clothes or tech or whatever - as I just thought it'd be a massive pain to get rid of the ones I didn't want.

If you shop around sellers you can pickup an X1 Carbon 6th Gen with similar specs to these at this price, same 8th Gen CPU's

I picked up a near mint X1 Carbon for £160 last week for a family member, lower spec with an i5 8350 and 8gb but a cracking Laptop for the price. (edited)

Waiting for my eBay laptop to arrive. 490s i7 16gb 512m . £314. Sold out but worth watching for next time with the 15% discount

Great laptop for pretty much anything that doesn't need strong GPU performance.

Will beat anything brand new that is twice this price, and probably last longer....

I had the t450 and upgraded to this about 6 months ago. Very happy with it so far.
  14. samwants2save's avatar
    I have a t440, backlit AND bulletproof!
    goinsane3's avatar
    T440p still going strong.

Not a strong performer now but still good laptop. Linux or Chrome OS Flex on it and it will fly for years.

They ruined the keyboards on this, i loved the t420s and prior, the keyboards were the best

Anyway to upgrade the SSD to 1TB on this and still keep the 12 month warranty with this seller?
  20. Deal_searcher's avatar
Unrelated to this deal but where there is a seller who allows best offers. Can you use the code if best offer amount is accepted?

I have had a Dell Latitude 7490 i5-8350u for years and its still going strong so recommend. Well made and easy to access dimms/ssd if you want to upgrade. Can be had for 235 from cex and probably cheaper on ebay if you hunt for them.

Just bear in mind with all old laptops the battery will not last as long. Mine now lasts about 1.5 hours but used to last 5 or 6

We’ve been deploying t460s at work. They run quite well. We’ve had an issue with ssds failing but I think that was because our refurb supplier was using cheapo drives. One down side is that the screen isn’t great compared to the oled on my personal computer. Hdmi works if you manually install the driver from the website and it works well with dell docking stations if you want more than one external screen. These laptops look a bit old fashioned. (edited)
    MagicBoy's avatar
There was an issue with firmware on some Lenovo supplied drives. We had about 50% failure rate on some with Intel SSDs in L460 & T460, all around the same time. (edited)
