With one ram slot being soldered and one upgradable, any ideas how they're arranged in the 8GB/12GB?
Say for example you go for 8GB, is it 8GB soldered or 4 + 4?

    It's 4gb soldered, then you can add 4gb for 8 total, or add 8 for 12 total. I bought a single 8gb ddr4 2400mhz stick in my T480

    Minecraft for a 7 year old ?

Should play it okay, it wont play lots of mods at full HD but you would want to opt for at least 8GB of RAM. 4GB in these isn't a good option for any sort of games. I don't think the upgraded RAM option in these is a good deal. The basic one that the get deal link takes you to is a good price but not sure about the upgrades direct (I'd probably buy the RAM separate and install it myself).

    Another option to consider

Thinkpad P50 so still have the robust build quality. Offers a larger display although at the same resolution as the deal, faster true quad core processor processor, designed more towards high heat applications so better for gaming. It wont be as good for battery life but I doubt a 7 year old will be gaming on the road. It is a slightly older model than the T480S here but I own several 10 year old plus Thinkpads that still work fine, they tend to last better than the equivalent £300 consumer laptop. Faster processor should manage Minecraft with plenty of mods and high resolution and scale with your child wanting to do homework/projects or introducing them to new games as they grow up.

    'Battery: Minimum 2 hours standby'
    Doesn't sound good.

Price in a new battery I reckon

Batteries are fairly cheap on these. Also given the seller offer 12 months guarantee, I'm guessing they would hell out if battery life is really bad!

Isn’t it cheaper to select the W10 option, then upgrade to W11 for free?

    £200 for 8/128 variant.

Might be worth considering for some

Assuming that will be 4GB soldered and another 4GB in the Sodimm slot, which means they are charging £25 for 4GB - robbing gits !

    Great deal tbh. Bargain considering.

Heat added, seems great for a Windows 11 laptop right now (edited)

I own one. Doesn't miss the bit at all. But I bought 8gb soldered version and added 8gb on top. And thatnis the version I would recommend. With 16gb ram, 4 core CPU and solid ThinkPad quality (they are business machines) it has served me well. Screens in those ThinkPad were always a bit washed out compared to x1 carbons or macbooks, but other than that it is a very capable laptop. Plenty of ports, great keyboard, super light (1.3kg I think) and the battery is great due to low voltage cpu. I still get 5 hours out of it, but I also keep my battery charging capped at max 80% charge when on mains to keep it healthy.

Small update for anyone still following:

I bought the 8gb (single, soldered) version for £207.99. It arrived looking like new. The casing, keyboard, trackpad - all must have been replaced.

Bought a Fibocom L830-EB 4G LTE WWAN CARD for £20 from eBay

Bought an Integral 8GB DDR4 RAM 2400MHz SODIMM from Amazon for £23.33

Bought an Integral UltimaPro X Version 3 - SSD - 1TB from Integral for £67.80

I contacted the eBay seller of the laptop because the battery only lasted about an hour as was down to 65% of original capacity. They sent me a brand new battery.

I went in to Windows Update and it let me upgrade to W11 Pro for free. I have since re-installed Windows using the new SSD.

So, total price £319.12 and i've got:

New looking ThinkPad T480s with Core i5-8350U,

4G LTE so have my £3 Three unlimited data SIM in and working fine,

    16GB RAM

really fast 1TB Gen 4 SSD

    Brand new battery

    Windows 11 Pro

    I'm happy with that.

Thanks for the follow up. I'm thinking of buying the 8GB version of this from itzoo for £219

I'd want to follow your lead and buy the upgrades you've suggested - but how easy is it to install those items yourself?
  11. Avatar
Is this the same as the recently expired Itzoo one?

Still use one of these as my daily laptop for IT field work, love it. Only niggle is the ethernet port isn't a full size port, has a little pull down flap, and I've had a couple of cheap ethernet cables refuse to release from this. Easy to unscrew and remove though. Has happened twice in the last 3 years, and I'm plugging and unplugging frequently.

Really want this, but the 4gb soldered memory puts me off. Adding 8Gb costs £13 bit adding 16gb is far more expensive at £32
    Avatar
So this could potentially have 20GB DDR4 Ram if you upgrade with a 16GB? Doesn’t seem too bad a deal

Trying to tell myself not to buy one

Ah waited too long! Can only get it for around 205 now but does have 8GB and Windows 11. Still not bad I guess but think there have been better/cheaper Thinkpads listed on here 😩😔

I bought one. Might install a Fibocom L830-EB Wireless WAN Adapter from AliExpress and put my £3 unlimited Three SIM in.

What’s your £3 unlimited Three sim? Really £3! Is this still available? Thanks in advance.
