Great ultrabook for a great price - I could not find this cheaper than £1000 anywhere.

Yes its not Skylake, and yes I think it has a TN screen but its a FANTASTIC ultrabook for the price (and yes its not a Macbook).
I have confirmed with Amazon today that if I don't like the screen I can send the laptop back for a full refund.

Brief spec:
Product Type: Ultrabook, Processor:Intel Core i5 (5th Gen) 5200U / 2.2 GHz ( 2.7 GHz ) / 3 MB Cache
Memory: 8 GB DDR3L, Storage: 256 GB - M.2 SSD TCG Opal Encryption 2
OS Provided: Windows 7 Professional/Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

Inbuilt WWAN modem (3G/4G)

great deal vs elsewhere but 8GB RAM just not enough for me....same problem (well one of them) I have with the Macbook. Really like that has a Matte display even if viewing angles not so good...this is a work laptop not a media machine so that shouldn't be an issue!

Warranty on this product code is 3 years next-day on site (so they'll send an engineer to your house/office with the part anywhere in the world, except North Korea I guess).
Perfect find op. Ordered one. Thanks
Thanks, hard to resist at this price.
purchased. 11 left to buy

By the looks of this they are ridiculously well made and tested to military standards

Means it is one of the top Lenovo models, probably also having something to do with carbon in the body (unsure). Build quality is exceptional.

Nothing in the listing indeed but the reviewers point out it has three years for them (you might have to supply an invoice to Lenovo if starting date is incorrect). Unfortunately the only way to check is the Lenovo Warranty check website but requires serial number :-(

Dell offer similar on their business class laptops
Did this model ever have an IPS panel? i.e. would it be possible to swap out the panel if you were determined enough?

Had a Clevo with what was the best panel available at the time (11.6", LVDS, 1366x768, 200:1 contrast ratio TN) and eventually someone made a better one that worked (same resolution and size but 1000:1 contrast ratio IPS) so I swapped it. Great upgrade if there's a poor panel in a laptop.
Gone!
Wow. There were 10 left a few minutes ago - I was just checking on how to replace the screen as I'm not overly impressed with TN panel in my current Thinkpad.

Not surprised at completely undercutting other sellers on internet. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them bought the lot or somebody has bought these all to sell. I was keeping an eye on these but like I said the 8GB not enough for me as use VMs...for 90% of users it will be a great bit of kit!

I also use VMs and at PC specialist can get the following so not sure whether to cancel!
i5 6200u
128gb m.2 ssd
FHD 15.6" screen
16gb RAM

Then i just need a OS from somewhere and plonk in my old 2.5 inch 1tb hard drive
I have had a look at the difference between a 5200u and 6200 u and can barely see that much difference am i missing anything?
I have X1 from the generation before, solid machine in almost every respect except never owned a laptop with a worse screen. It's total garbage. Would not recommend getting one unless you see the screen in person first and think you can live with it.

What particular aspects let the screen down?

This is a 3rd generation X1, if you had a second generation model then it's no wonder you had issues with it. The 2nd gen were plagued with issues and complaints from both ordinary punters and the hardcore Thinkpad fanbase. The 3rd generation is generally praised as being a Thinkpad back on form.

Except that's the model with the improved IPS display you've linked to, I'm guessing the guy you're replying to got the cheaper TN panel in which case I can agree. It took Lenovo a few years longer than most of the other manufacturers to realise that a good screen on a device where all your interaction is with that screen matters, especially when you get the keyboard aspect mostly right.

Yes, you can. I'm going to try, as my work model has the IPS and is perfect. This one is TN and is utter garbage. Worse than any TN I've ever seen or owned. A new IPS screen can be had on eBay for under 50 quid I believe. Swap looks slightly hairy but doable

Yes, it's 3 years. I input my serial and it's good to 2019. Must've sat in the warehouse for 6 months, so will need to argue the toss with Lenovo direct

depends on how many you need at once. most Linux VM are fine on 1GB! I'm looking into learning a bit of hadoop and cluster computing so it isn't ok for me but also if give less ram as has SSD still works ok. I've got a Macbook Air with 4GB RAM but can still run a windows 7 VM on it's own with 2GB fine as SSD helps with cache issues.

Yea probably not worth risking such a good warranty and the hassle + cost. But I may change my mind once I see it oO
A couple have shown up in the Warehouse. Are these from people on here? Was this from the TN screen issues?

I managed to buy an X1 Carbon laptop which I feel I don't need any more. It's still packed in original and am happy to offer it for the same price I got it, if your interested.
