A complete revision of my guide - Feel free to repost if needed but please credit me if you use some or part of it. Advice given is guidance, be sure to do your own research before you spend any money.

Note for anyone buying the one linked here that it runs XP Pro - See below for details in the "software you will need" section.

If anyone does have any questions when they get their machine I'd recommend asking them in my previous deal with the 800+ comments as there are a lot of people subscribed to that thread who all know what's good, bad and to be worked out when you get the machine. Most questions people may have will likely already have been asked in this thread - Click here

Hardware you will need

Cheap charger - £5.99/6.99 or £13.99

**UPDATE** - I no longer recommend the cheap ebay chargers. I have gotten myself the following model at £13 and rate it well. Several other people have purchased the same model and report no issues unlike the old recommendations listed below which have a tendancy to stop working.

There are 2 options for chargers you need to consider 90w or 65w depending on your needs

£6.99 Charger - NOT RECOMMENDED TO BUY
The above is a 90w model that is bulkier and heavier but allows you to use the laptop without the processor being throttled if the battery is not inserted. Further reading here

£5.99 Charger - NOT RECOMMENDED TO BUY
The above is the 65w model that is smaller and more portable, but will throttle the laptops processor to 66% if the battery is not installed.

As said, I don't recommend them and nor do most people now we've tried them out a they die all the time. What I do rate is this one - Click here for the Leicke charger. There are 2 versions of the charger 1 with 2 USB ports to charge other devices and one without. The additional USB ports do add to the overall cost.

_____________________________________________

Replacement battery - £12.99 or £14.69

The supplied battery should last over an hour, again you have 2 choices a 4 cell that fits flushly with the body of the laptop or an 8cell that sticks out the back. The main difference is that the 8 cell lasts twice as long. There is also a 12cell battery but I've not yet found this one available anywhere at a price as good as the 4 or 8 cell varieties.

£14.69 Battery
Cheapest 8 cell available

£14.99 Battery
Alternative 8 cell battery for a few pence more

£41.00 12 Cell battery - Not recommended as for the price you can get nearly 3 8 cell batteries and nearly double the battery life as a result. Also note this will NOT fit in the Ultrabase

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

Optional items

WWAN upgrade - £13.00 + cost of antennas

I went looking last night at 3g dongles and surprisingly discovered this seller offering the WWAN cards compatible with the X series (eg x60, x61, x200, x201). The price is very good in my opinion as it wasn't a cheap upgrade on the original machines.

If anyone goes for it you will need to get some Antenna's for it but these can be had quite cheaply online.

£13.00 - WWAN upgrade

Ultrabase with DVD - £11.99 - £15.99

The ultrabase is not entirely required but does add some useful features. Be careful when buying as there are 2 versions of the Ultrabase X6, one for the X61T (tablet), and this one for the standard X61 and the X61s.

£15.99 Ultrabase X6

---O- The Astec123 Turbo guide to the Ultrabase X6 -O---

General information about the x6 ultrabase and it's features can be found here.

All these ultrabase SLIM devices are supported in the bases DVD slot.

The battery option is available in the ultrabase x6 that supports the x61 and x61s. However, it's generally very expensive add on but one worth considering when picking up an ultrabase.

To add a SATA disk you will need the correct caddy which can be had for £7 from Malaysia.

Another important point, if you buy one second hand is to check if the keys are supplied. Not a major issue if they are not as they are not needed unless you want to prevent the base being taken off the laptop.

Click here for sorting out the key issue.

As you can see they are really useful to set up on a desk at home with the charger, then you just undock the laptop and walk away. Then to return home, simply redock the laptop and it will charge up.

Software you will need and guides to getting the software running

You will require a windows ISO if you don't already have one or a disk to use to get one.
The models posted here will either have Windows XP Pro, or Windows Vista Business or Windows 7.

Of these options Windows Vista and Windows 7 are the easiest to get up and running. You can legally download these for free from the likes of
heidoc.net/joo…t=0

If you have one with Windows XP, this represents a small problem, if you have a disk you will need to create an ISO from it to install to this machine. If you have neither an ISO or a Disk to get it from then there are NO and lets just say that again no legal ways to get a copy of Windows XP. If you purchased and didn't bother to look into this detail do not start moaning at me, the guide has a comment about doing your own research first and SCH also warn that no OS is provided too.

Moving forward, you will need to source a Windows XP Pro disk, if you have an old computer with XP pro this will do, alternatively you will need to get one from a friend or download (Illegally) a copy off the internet. No I will not provide you with a link and No I will not guide you to getting one either. I have my own disks for every Windows version so have no need to find a copy. Once you have a copy of Windows XP then the setting up to install on the laptop is fairly straightforward and similar to the next link.

A very helpful thread for anyone that buys one of theseHeat added.

Why thank you kind sir. I shall be posting my 1st post from the last one in here, please can people like it if they feel it's useful as it will then be directly under the deal.

I've marked as Expired as its just a price reduction on the previous posting:
hotukdeals.com/dea…e=1

Apologies Astec123 - maybe get your deal updated and unexpired.

It's worth keeping this post up so more people will see it. Lots of people, myself included, browse the site via most recent posts first.

I've had one for years. Very easy to upgrade ram and hdd etc. got mine to 4gb ram 500 gb hdd. Beats my wife's brand new £1000 odd dell piece of crap any day

It's over a month old so it's allowed to be reposted under the HUKD rules. I think it's better this stays here as most people review the deals from the entire day.

As to the deals they have a few of note

7674-CTO - could be anything at all on this one.but would reflect similar spec to the 2 previous models but missing some bits like the fingerprint reader, add a better screen, no bluetooth or other slight changes.

Great reseller to work with.

At Grade B they should be in excellent shape with a few minor scuffs here and there.

What a deal.... The build quality on this series of thinkpads are second to none for robustness and stability.

Be warned though... you'll become totally attached to one of these when you own one.

I've placed several orders with this bunch of jokers and never received the laptop as specified. Usual trick is to send out a slower processor or smaller HDD and then ignore you when you complain.

Very very very icy.

Astek123,

Here is a source of a SATA I (or II with flashed bios) for the X6:

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/…391

Contrary to another source I tried, this works well with my X61

BTW, thanks the the tip on the WWAN card... while it's not something I need, at this price it was too good to pass (I may actually use this card on a T410 -with modded bios- as I'm not too much of a fan of the external antenna on the X61... we shall see)

LOL - I think the website just crashed

Can anyone explain why are these good? I mean I see them often and everybody seems to be crazy about them.

Thanks

Dirt cheap and pretty powerful spec for basic use.

Personally, I think it's the build quality - it is simply excellent (especially the keyboard). The plastic is solid and will take knocks no problem.

You also get 'proper' processor, not an Atom despite it's size (might just be me, but not a fan of Atom processors). Perfect for portable computing.

I have had the complete opposite experience with their customer services. I had a battery which would not hold its charge, I phoned them and a replacement sent out and delivered the very next day!

not heared of lenovo until a few days ago sum guys work was throwing it out and asked if i could wipe everything of and reinstall xp and put a few proggys on.was realy impressed with it for a basic pc.

Instead of Windows, you can put Chrome OS (chromeos.hexxeh.net) or (almost) any other version of Linux (for example ubuntu.org), which are both free and both offer different use scenarios.

Ordered one these last month. Really neat little piece of kit. Hot!

Interesting point, I've ordered an X200 (grade C) without a hard disk and it arrived with a lower speed processor but double the RAM. I also ordered an X61 and it was exactly as specified on their site so while their quality control about the listings is not brilliant you can always return it if you get one that is not as you expected.

I'lll agree with Gordon Bell here, they are well made, take a beating and his comment about Atom processors is totally justified, I replaced a netbook with an X61 and then the X61 with an X200, I hardly use my desktop replacement machine now.

I'm sure you've heard of IBM, Lenovo a company from China that purchased IBM's consumer and business computer business a number of years ago, the build quality of IBM machines is still there including the robust look on the X and other series. Some older Thinkpad models are still in regular use and in fact the thinkpad series is the only laptop brand to be certified for use in space (there are loads aboard the ISS. What Lenovo machine did you get from the guy from work?

cold, you can have macbook air for £1000

I love my X60s but it is slowly dying, so a cheap X61 is a fantastic offer - I already have the Ultrabay / proper PSU's.

A pity their web shop died half way through - my Kalixa card has been charged, but I have no order confimation - and the laptop is still in my basket!

Let's hope their support is helpful!

EDIT: with my luck, all the units will have sold out by the time they respond to support tomorrow morning.

No thats the X61T - Tablet edition
This is a plain X61.

There are a number of versions of all the X series models, with the X61 there are 3 as follows.
X61 - plain notebook processors (this laptop)
X61S - Ultra Low Voltage Processors (massive battery life 10hours is common but not as much power)
X61T - Tablet version of the laptop that is not compatible with anything in my first post in this thread.

To add to this you will need to use the link in my first post to update the BIOS to support SATA II as it wont work nearly as fast. But these accept an SSD very well.

A pretty great spec laptop for the price.
