does it have to be the hp ProLiant crew?

Just always disappointed with the TS150 compared to the previous TS140 that came with an e1225v3 (i5 competitive performance wise), a 450w Platinum PSU and 1TB drive and often dipped under £200 with cashback although only 4gb compared to this 8.

Tiptop price for make, build quality & USB3 connections alone!

Runs mouse quiet, 8 #yes 8!# super speed USB3's, roughly year old model range, 4 ram slots up to 64gb plus loads more for a bananas price!
How would this be as an Unraid NAS?

I'd imagine one of those is for the LOM.

No caddies either, but they're a couple of quid on eBay.
Any good for using as a cheap desktop PC? I've got some old hard drives and graphics cards lying around.

Would this be good as a Plex server?

@ jetsetwilly- is it the one that is £104 on the link you provided?

My TS140 has been excellent as a Plex server. That one came with a Xeon E3-1226 v3, so check how the Pentium G4400 compares, but I'd highly recommend it has a Plex server.

Use Unraid as your OS with the offical Plex 'docker' app. It's brilliant.

E1226v3 in mine. RAM up to 12GB (definitely overkill, used for Plex transcode directory).
Unraid OS. 14.5TB storage (10.5TB usable space), 2x SSDs in RAID1 for Appdata.

Unraid allows you to add as many hard drives as you like, you lose one drive as 'parity' but if any drive is lost/fails you can continue using server, access alll files as normal, and reconstruct the drive in one or two clicks once you've replaced it.

RAID1 on the SSD's means if an SSD failed I don't lose all my appdata but only 50% space is usuable, but that's only for appdata.

AFAIK it comes with one NIC. The 2 additional are optional. The AMT functionality shares the built-in NIC.
Ordered one for a NAS unit. I have a load of HDD, which I can stick in this get rid of some old PC's. Thanks OP

Stick a HDD and you'll be fine, the G4400 has a iGPU so no need for a graphic card.
Edited by: "RiverDragon8" 13th Jan
Be warned, this only comes with cables for 3 HDDs. It uses a custom cable too so it's not a simple case of buying more, gotta buy a specialist one from lenovo or make one yourself.

*edit* to be clear, SATA power. It's a non-standard 4 pin power connector on the motherboard that gets converted to 3x SATA power. As pointed out below you can get a SATA power splitter that turns 1x SATA power to 3x, 4x etc.

this cpu is weaker than @sneakybifta 's server so beware when considering for Plex

Ahh, thanks they teased me with the image of the IO. I suppose a card would be cheap.
Does the TS140 lack this AMT feature,

For the power or SATA connections?

Surely you can just use SATA power splitter cables. My TS140 is fine with an extension cable that turns 1 SATA power connection into four.

If it's a lack of SATA data sockets, get a PCIe SATA card.
Really curious about how this compares to a proliant gen 8 as a plex server? Been looking out for a gen 8 for a while but would be tempted by this if it's better, can any one she'd some light?

This would be great as a Plex server - plenty powerful enough for HD content. Unsure about UHD.

I have the Xeon as per above which is way overkill for Plex alone but I have a VM on mine running plex server and it is great
Compared to the Gen 8 - the CPU in this is way more powerful 0 the benchmark of the Celeron G1610T in the Gen 8 is only 2316 compared to the 3577 here. With 8GB ram included I would think this is better in pretty much every way to a home user at least
Not a techy here. I run plex server on this. Direct play run smoothly ( no idea abt uhd) but transcodind makes cpu 90% utilised but still miss frames. Guess cpu is not powerful enough. But this machine is quiet. Plenty of usb3. Great machine for running the ultimate server. Happy buyer. Heat added

Plex can use a GPU instead so perhaps that's an option if you have a decent one lying around.
Using ts140 for my plex server last couple of years it's been faultless and really happy with this looks a bargain to me.
If only I could get another drive cage for the ts440 I bought via hukd a couple of years back 😣

It's sata power and I hadn't thought of that. Are splitters cheap? How do they hold up under the current draw of 4 drives spinning up?
Anybody know what the motherboards like in these? Sata slots and pcie 16x? Also what's the power supply like and is it standard 24 pin? Tempted to buy as a project PC but would probably need a standard motherboard and psu if I stood a chance of upgrading it.

Yeah, they're cheap. That's the one I use, under £4 but much cheaper, basic splitters are available.

I've had no issues with the current draw but maybe it's worth considering if you're planning loads and loads of drives.

Power supply and motherboard are non-standard. Maybe pick up some second hand parts on ebay for a project PC.

ECC RAM
Should be. I use the TS140 as development workstation - the graphics card it came with drives 3 monitors which is perfect for my needs. Looks like the card with this will run 2.Tempted to get this as a backup. Shame there are no decent deals on a better CPU nowadays.

ECC RAM & out of band management for starters.
