what qualification do they have CLAIT? ECDL?
I refurbish laptops and have an english degree.. am I qualified?

Battery guaranteed to last 45 minutes? Doesn't sound very portable!

I've bought a couple of refurbed Thinkpads in the past (not from this supplier) and never regretted it. An replacement battery wouldn't be too expensive. This will get a free upgrade to Win10.
I'm wondering if it's time to swap up from my X200...

45 minutes?

Still longer than me.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. No one is ever a "technician" or "operative" these days.

Cheaper to buy a knock off for £20 every year then it is to buy those.

Or here's a genuine one for 1/4 of the price:
ebay.co.uk/itm…369

These were also subject to a battery recall in the US due to a potential overheating / fire hazard, so if you're going to buy, check that your one isn't affected or can be replaced without charge (or that you've got house insurance!!). Not sure to what extent it affects European models.

No. He probably meant buy one from one of the many reputable 3rd party companies out there like:

If your budget can stretch and you can find one (I managed to) it is worth at least splashing out the extra £25 for a Sandy Bridge X220 rather than the 1st gen i5s

Duracell, I'd trust, but not the battery from that 2nd link - looks like some cheap dodgy battery from China with minimal QC.

We just replaced these after 5 years of service at my workplace. Very robust and reliable saveca few replacement system fans. I'd pay this for one but I'd recommend the 9 cell batteries if you can get one cheap somewhere.

great laptops but really pay a bit extra and get x220 or x230 , Got mine x230 for 210pounds some 5months ago - it was just 15hours used! Best robust laptop I have ever had.

I've had 3 batteries for Lenovo laptops in the last few years 1 12cells for my X200 and 2 9 cell batteries for my X61 when I still had it. All still going strong. The only one that had an issue was one for the X200 which was replaced with the working one and I got to keep the one that didn't hold a full charge from the outset. Otherwise all still going strong.

As to the deal. This is about the going rate for an X201 and nothing particularly special about the deal.

I say this as I've just had a look and as I've seen a couple of places offering 2nd gen i5 processors for the same money. I also did just stumble upon an couple of 2nd gen i3 12/13inch laptop for under £100.

I was and still am a qualified Olivetti engineer, got it from being trained by Olivetti.
Then they went bump, nothing to do with be mind!

I have 4 Thinkpads in my house. they are the best second hand laptop money can buy!

bought a T 61, put a spare memory in it and running as a Home server. Best bit - got a genuine Office 2007 enterprise and photoshop with it .

Having dealt with a few computer/technical "engineers" in my time I'm curious, what exactly did the Olivetti training involve?

At the very least they tell you that this is 1st generation i5! Many other would just state "lightning fast i5" or the likes to fool people

I have the i7 tablet version of this. Added a small SSD and increased the RAM to 6gb and its a great little laptop now.

This was the last X-series with the classic style keyboard. It's the reason I still use one! The chiclet keys on the 230 are awful.

Was a while ago but training that pertained to the hardware and software of specific models -
Not sure whether you've come across mobile phone repair centres?
The engineers are often certified for specific phones, a bit like that.

You are not. What are you trying to prove? CLAIT and ECDL are computer application I suppose. There are other technician level courses out there. Like Comptia A+. Where they learn many things. e.g. how static electricity can damage internal parts, application of thermal paste, trouble shooting etc.

Not chartership with a recognised engineering institute then, IMechE etc? Someone gave me their business card the other day, which stated they were a 'Sales Engineer'... never heard anything so daft. Needless to say I put the card in the bin, which was later emptied by a 'Refuse Maintenance Engineer'.

+1 - Switched the bulk of my relatives over to ThinkPads (mixture of T420, T430, X201, X220 & X230 models), as they are pretty solid and reliable plus it's easy enough to get replacement parts for them - the X201 is an older model but still pretty decent to run; I run one myself (with a swapped in WXGA+ LCD), 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD and a 2TB HDD accessed via a Lenovo Docking Station for data backups.

You can get Lenovo batteries from Amazon itself at a decent price:

amazon.co.uk/LEN…200

The 9 cell version has been as low as £55 from the same vendor:

uk.camelcamelcamel.com/Len…2QM

As Astec123 wrote though, the price for this great laptop is not exceptional...

I guess it's up to the manufacturer what bar they set to be a qualified engineer. This was simply an example of what has been deemed as acceptable to be qualified as an engineer for a specific manufacturer set out by the manufacturer.

Not unless you have something like a CompTIA A+ or vendor certification.

Wow do they still do CLAIT and ECDL? They were about as much use as a chocolate tea-pot.

Paid £99 for mine off ebay last year.
This is expensive
Mines still going strong

Not much bigger than a netbook but with no decent battery its not even very portable. Decent price but as is its not really a wow. It has potential if you wanna spend more.

The X220 (Sandy Bridge) has the normal keyboard as well. It's also much faster than the X201.
