not particularly tech-minded so would appreciate some advice on this as I've also been shopping around for a new laptop.
Price seems good but the John Lewis site says this doesn't have a dvd drive...also no Ethernet port....how big a deal is thelack of these features?
I need something to do photo and video editing at a basic level..also some music production so presumably looking at having to get an external cd/dvd drive..not overly bothered about gaming...although kids might say different.
was considering the lenovo y50-70 from argos posted on here but now OOS.
cheers
I would just buy one or the other tbh..
I though yoga is the high end market product.

This is the first Yoga I have seen which does not come with FHD.
It uses an IPS panel, which is the most important bit. 768p resolution is a consequence of keeping the cost down.
For a bit under £100 more my girlfriend bought this with 1080p screen, 1tb+8gb SSHD, and an i5 5200U from PC world with the cashback deal they have going on. It's a nice looking laptop but the screen is far from the nicest I've seen and battery life is much worse than expected considering the specs.

You'd be better off looking at an intel i5 equipped laptop for that kind of work. The AMD in this is not bad for home use but will struggle with work like that. You also ideally want an ips full hd screen for photo work. This had ips but a basic resolution.

I'm also looking for a reasonably priced laptop for photo editing (enthusiastic amateur level). Are all full HD screens IPS? Looking at the descriptions on various websites they don't seem to say if the screen is IPS or not.

No, a lot will be TN which is cheap and not ideal. Usually if it doesn't say, it's a TN screen. The marketing teams like to make you aware it's using an ips panel. I'll see if I can find anything suitable around this price.

This is going to be a better bet for you.

Customise it with an i3 (similar, if not better than the AMD in this), 500GB drive, 8GB Ram and a full HD IPS screen. coming up as £488 inc vat for me. Really good deal :

pcspecialist.co.uk/for…00/
fab, thank you for that...if I was going to upgrade any of the components on that deal what would you prioritise? for example i5 processor or a SSD hard drive. there also appears to be a lot of upgrade options on the Ram choices. hadn't thought of customising but seems a really good option... thanks again
also....last thing, I promise! is the Intel HD graphics card a good enough choice for video editing? not planning any serious gaming but I noticed it's non-upgradeable
