They will also price match the 8500 from Amazon.
What’s the difference between this and the 8500?
This is a Currys only version of the LG 55SM8600PLA without Dolby Vision.
I’ve been looking at this set and the LG 55SM8600PLA. Here is a comparison including the LG 55SM8500PLA....

It's not only without dolby vision, also looks like 60Mhz instead of 120, and other features missing too.

Almost as bad as Toshiba amd low end pannys!

Do you have an Atmos amp and a speaker in the roof?
Atmos lol another gimmick for the Currys salesman to add to the schpiel!

Nah i retired when i was 40 i only repair stuff now for fun.
All the local pensioners bring me their stuff as i do any repair for free for the poor auld folks!
Laptop, pc's, smartphones, tv, even had an Akai Vcr last week took me ages to fix.
Helped a few folks on here repair their teevs as well - its not hard tvs are much like pc's it can be as simple as popping
onto shopjimmy on ebay and buying a new £10 ysus board or psu and pulling the old one out plugging it in - no landfill is my motto!
Even the most common led tv failure can be fixed if you are willing to take the time a simple 25p led usually fixes many led tv problems its just taking them apart that is the hassle!
Plus I enjoy the challenge!

What brands would you suggest? TCL seem fairly new to this country?
Tcl have their own screen fab plant so no dodgy stuff from Turkey for a start and the electornics is pretty good.
Very popular in the USA
Even Linus on youtube recommends em!

All depends If you are a tv snob then its Samsung, Sony and the high end pannys

If you dont know your 1080p from 4k then really it can be a matter for most as just the cheapest
But TCL is cheap so i would go for them or even Hisense arent bad contrary to popular opinion!

You got lemonade pockets or silk lined?

even oled lgs your against?
im looking at qleds at minute and oled b9 but theres so much missing from certain sets or if they do have it then its a crap half assed thing, like edge lit
There is a night and day difference between TCL/Hisense models in USA compared to here. The ones in the US can at-least compete with the high-end TVs. For UK, you're looking at them competing in the budget TV market alongside the low end RU7000s, SM7000s, XG7000s, etc.

Anyways, it depends what you want to get out of the TV, at this price I'd wait for a deal on the SM8600, RU8000 or Q60R.
had 2 LG plasmas for over 7 years still going strong
Guys what are the viewing angles like on these tvs? Is the picture quality poor when looking at the tv at an angle?
Sm8500 viewing angles are great from anyside our TV in the middle we watch from the left and right hand side and straight on it looks all the same

TCL's UK models are very different from their US models. I too saw all the good US TCL reviews but couldn't find any comparable 6000 series models on their UK site.

I don’t mind spending a little more as I’m more for ‘value for money’ when budget is concerned. I rather spend a more more for something, to avoid spending out twice sort of approach. Our screen size will be between 43” and 50”. The only reason why I’m considering the upgrade is because a new install of Sky q is coming our way.

As an owner, would you mind confirming a few things on your SM8500 for me?
1. Is the side lit local dimming as bad as reviews suggest when viewing in a dark room?

And some (probably) more difficult to confirm ones:
2. Does it definitely have a 20W subwoofer in addition to the main 20W speaker?
3. Is it HDMI 2.0 or 2.1?
4. Are there 3 or 4 HDMI ports?
5. Are the USB sockets 2.0 or 3.0?

As I mentioned in a previous post, Amazon, AO.com, Currys and LG all list slightly different specs for the SM8500, with some third party sites even suggesting it has full array local dimming

I'm with you on this Andy - for so many TV models now, it seems really hard to trust the comparisons and the reviews, with so many different variations.

Yep, as a consumer I’m confused with so many variations, as it stands I rather leave the purchase with so much ‘trickery’ or nonsense being claimed by retailers. It’s bad when the exact same model number are still different to each other!

Wait till the ysus board goes or you get the nasty red sparklies!
Try googling "lg plasma red sparklies problem" i have one in the workroom art the mo LGPK390 - LG supposedly fixed the problem then people were getting green sparklies on the new models lol

Even though most repair guys hate LG plasmas the picture quality on the PK range was pretty impressive to me just a shame about the electronics on the Ysus and Psu boards!
I will say their computer monitors are pretty reliable i have one on my main pc its a combo 3d tv and its been going since 2012 no repairs yet!

Or the famous LG plasma psu board resistor failure - you only need to look on Shopjimmy to see the repair kits for common faults on any telly or join us repair guys on the badcaps forum and you can fix your own telly its like fixing a pc these days its all board swapping - you can keep any telly alive - i have a 103 inch panny plasma its failed 3 times but i have kept it going its about 12 years old only 1080p and cost £65,000 when it first came out and I wouldnt swap it for anything - big is better especially when you like movies, and playing computer games!

Yeah i agree it is true but the uk version whilst cut down and dont have the quality of the us variants are still a good buy over Toshiba, finlux etc

I am not that bothered about 4k, hdr and all that guff a picture is a picture to me and i guess for 90% of the folks who come on here to find a cheap eal on a teev and i repair the things - i dont get involved in techie arguments over which display is best as i cant really tell the difference - I still have an old panasonic plasma 1080p and its good enough for me, mind you it is 103" so i will argue bigger is better and to be frank i cant tell much difference when i have the youview box on 1080p or standard and i guess that will be the same for most punters but some peeps on here are videophiles and i dont doubt they know their stuff but for me i just want to play WOT and Star Wars Battlefront II on a massive screen and watch Rick chop them Zombos in TWD or FTWD LOL!

I will stick with my Plasma till then!

The problem with that approach is a little more wont get you much in the way of paying twice.
With tellies now you either pay for quality top end or buy low budget there isnt any middle ground anymore like it used to be back in the old days!

I see as many so called mid range pannys as i do Toshiba and Hisense in the workshop!
Besides its how you treat your electronics that makes em last - My microwave is 40+ years old because i dont slam the door on it and i dont cover the ventilation slats and just with led tellies dont leave the backlight on 100% for more than 8 hours a day but the problem is people dont either rtfm or care really - out in Slovakia where i live everyone saves absolutely everything nothing is thrown out - Uk has become a throwaway society its really quite sad to see 20 led tellies up at the local dump last time i was thre when probably 90% of them could be fixed with a simple 25p led.

Yeah true but when you consider crt tv's lasted 20 years its a bit sad really and not great for the environment dont you agree?

And we are in the same boat my plasma is still going strong and ive repaired it 2 times and i have the yellow red sparklies again ysus is going so gonna be 3 repairs now in 10 years but i will keep it going the part is only £10 on ebay its cheaper than replacing all the capacitors on the board actually which actually causes the fault!
Edited by: "omendata" 25th Nov 2019
I have a Panasonic plasma TH-42PW7, purchased 2005. Still going strong, never missed a beat, and never had to turn up the brightness as it aged. About to get a new TV, and it's a real shame no one will want this 2nd hand. It's single def but still looks good (although clearly not vs 4K) ... but when the whole "HD" thing exploded a few years later people used to come by my house and assume it was HD, it looked that good.

Anyway ... times move on ... but it is a shame that TVs are now viewed as "5 year and replace" electronics. Not very Environmentally friendly!
