i have this.

Its good, and quiet, but the blue LED on the front is really bright and offputting - so I put a piece of card in front of it.

Great drive, and very useful for people who have got loads of HD-DVD from the cheap hmv deals etc.

I paid £60 off ebay about 6 months ago, but this is good from amazon.

One of the customer reviews on Amazon says it doesn't record to Blue-ray discs.

OK, please excuse me if I'm being thick here, but I've got flu so bad it hurts to think. However, in the product description it gives write speeds for BD-R and BD-RE.

they have been around this price for months give or take a quid

As said, you'll pay a fair bit more for a Blu-Ray burner. ;-)

I can It doesn't. Reader only I'm afraid.

In its defence, anyone wanting to backup nearly 30gb of data should buy an external HDD

I don't know whether you meant to be sarcastic, but I took it like that, and probably fairly!

I don't think you can copy bluray anyway though can you?

just waiting for lg to drop the price of the external version which is still £159.99, but great price for this one

Yes you can backup Blu-Ray but it costs a small fortune to achieve it. The discs are very expensive and so is the burner.
There are programs out there to enable a rip but obviously I'm not going to post them on here. A simple Google search will help you out

Bought this drive several months back to put into my Shuttle Media Centre PC. Drive works fine - but my graphics card inbuilt into the Shuttle system does not support HD playback. i now have several HD DVD discs that cannot be played back.

The drive reads the discs - but PowerDVD 7.3 (which supports HDDVD playback) does not work with the graphics card.

Anyone else got this problem? Can anyone recommend a good graphics card to support this drive compatible with HDDVD content? Needs to be small to fit into the case. Also - not sure if there will be a knock on impact on my sound card (also built in).

Thanks

Great drive, and includes PowerDVD for HD playback too. Bargain (If I didnt already have one......)

you sure its the card and not the monitor not being HDCP? Try connecting via VGA which should work regardless.

Also, as far as I am aware, it's only the deluxe versions of PowerDVD that will work. [there should be an HD DVD logo on the splash screen]

Stupidly IMO, PowerDVD dropped it's support for HD DVD in the later versions [8 onwards I think] but a subsequent fix was made available on the net. Still had BR covered of course.

Hi Mate

A cheap option for HD playback for your shuttle PC would be something like the Sapphire ATi Radeon HD 3450.

Fairly cheap on Microdirect about £25.

Only if everyone was as knowledgeable as you! What a **** world we'd live in.

Anyway, good find. Looking to buy one and stick in the home media pc that I will build one day!! At least my HD-DVDs will be used long after tne 360 has given up the ghost.

Hot Hot Hot!

Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a go!

Definately the card not the output. I have my shittle hooked up to a 46" Sony KDL46W2000 TV which is high definiation 1080p, and have my picture been output via HDMI. Its the card for definate - and Shuttle support are useless!

I won't bother to get a Blueray writer until the media comes down to a real price.

You can buy blank dvds for 10p. 25GB/4.7GB would need 6 dvds costing 60p
A Blueray 25GB would cost £10.99 at Play.com, Ebuyer £4.08 --depending on brand and speed as the first ones are slower.

Sony 50GB DL £20.13

Expensive coasters.

£26.31 for a re-writeable 25GB.

It would be cheaper to buy a hard disk for backing up.

I do remember a time when it cost £500 for a slow 2x CD-Writer and the media was around £12 a blank.
It'll be years before Bluray media comes down in price.

No one is going to pay those prices.

Only problem seems to be it doesnt have HDMI out. Looks like you need a DVI:HDMI adapter which I assume will reduce quality.

Really need a small graphics card, compatible with HDDVD, and HDMI output.

Just wanted to add that I wouldn't buy from MicroDirect. When something goes wrong they are a nightmare to contact and get things sorted.

I ordered a graphics card and some memory and they were both faulty. Took ages to get an RMA then I heard nothing after sending them back. The refund took over a month and the postage cost.

I was sending them them 3 emails a day and they were being ignored, contacted bank and trading standards. Sent a recorded delivery letter before finally gettting money back.

It wasn't just me having problems with these people, do a net search.

A dvd to hdmi cable will not reduce quality as it's digital and the pins are compatible and no conversion is done.

Best to check if your pc is compatible with a blu/hd drive.

voted cold as scan are cheaper, £61 when it goes on today only page too.

To the person who wanted to backup blurays to an external harddrive, use Anydvd HD, it can rip blurays to .iso, you can store the .iso's on your external harddrive. This software should also hopefully let you play blurays without needing hdmi output on your graphics card or hdcp on your dvi output, there is a 15day free trial, give it a whirl.

thanks for the post but voted warm, because a simple search on the web finds you a similar price. For example, in dabs.com £65 delivered.
