You do if you are splashing £500 on a sound bar dude thats audiophile money on something that will never produce surround!
If you want a real cinema experience then this is not what you want and cetainly not 500 sovvs you would be equally at home with the cheap £50 one from Lidl!

But i do get your point most people are just plain lazy and laying lots of cable might jsut be too much effort!
But that is the British Public for ya INNIT!

Really i just saw this one yesterday - not bad and probably 1000 times better than this!

What do you suggest then?
Would you have any issues pairing this with a samsung 55" Q90R? Currently using a sonos playbar, worth the upgrade?
earldn623/11/2019 19:31

What do you suggest then?

Soundbarwise? - any old crap will do - just get a wooden snooker cane carry box from your local snooker hall and stick in some cheap chinese bluetooth speakers and hey presto same as this for a tenner!
lol

What would i recommend - well there isnt any substitution for a good surround amp - dolby atmos if you can afford it with a decent set of speakers and don not be conned by the wireless gig - wired is and always will be best whether its computer networking or audiophile stuff - any techie, network engineer or electronics audiophile nutter obsessed with OPFC and Monster cables will tell you this!

If ye canny afford it then just get yourself a 5.1 PC surround kit like the deal i posted above for £140 sovvs much cheaper than being a sucker and paying 500 nicker for this cloddhopping nonsense - i repair this kind of stuff ever seent he inside of these things about £20 worth of electronics even the speakers are poor mid grade chinese rubbish instead of the gold dome stuff you get in some car setups!

The problem is most folks are too lazy and just want the easy fix but then complain when they get it that its nae use and end up spending twice!

It's not all about the money. Some of us just don't want cables trailing around the room or don't have a room that's the right layout or shape for a proper surround speaker setup to work. In those cases a soundbar will give you the next best thing, and this is a very good soundbar. What HiFi gave it 4 stars when it was £1200, so it's arguably good value at this price. Sure you can buy cheaper, as you can with any home audio, but they wont sound the same.

Not disagreeing with you if you dont really care about home cinema and dont want the cinema experience but i am a bit of a movie buff and want to experience the cinema if i have to spend £500+ - Sheeeeeit i didnt even spend that on my whole setup in my place what you are spending on this piece of convenience - it doesnt even do Atmos without Hdmi!¬
Wireless lol another convert to the con of wireless tech!

I used to have a friend like you who thought it was great then i took him to a listening room in Glasgow Bath Street if i remember rightly and he heard real surround sound cinema setup it blew his socks off and to be fair i was once a 3 speaker skeptic but once you have experienced how it is really done there is no substitute - seriously! He is now spends thousands on his setup such is his quest for the cinema experience lol he even has a hot dog, candy floss and popcorn machine in his manroom as well as the pool table and star wars sitin cabinet - now that is what i call a man cave!

But hey if you are just a casual tv viewer and just watch Get me out of here and Corrie and dont want to experience the Mandalorian or astounding surrround movies like THE ROAD then thats fine but once you do you will never go back - I didnt!

£1200 lol you are having me on - do you believe all you read.

I repair stuff like this and the electronics inside and speakers are not even worth £100!
I just fixed a mid range Panasonic tv last week and the psu board was a disgrace as are the drive board and even the screen manufacture in Turkey by Vestel - you cannot believe the labels anymore mate - just because its £500 or a panny does not mean its good or will last long and thats what i hate - poor folks being sold on substandard electronics designed to fail after 4 years+ and paid reviews everywhere - the good old days were exactly that ask any electornics repair guy.

For instance just ask any tv manufacturer why the leds in an led tv are not wired in parallel but series = it may cost a bit more for a voltage regulator chip but its is what kills 90% of the led tv's we see in the workshop and all because a single 25p led blows and the design was 101% purposefully designed to fail - then there are the amplifier chips in these stupid boxes and even some surround amps with tiny little heatsinks - cmon even you should know sticking a high heat generation ciruit inside a tiny box is going to fry the chip faster - its why apple laptops are krudd and tv's getting thinnner was a terrible idea!
I am just trying to give you the real facts - Just ask Louis Rossman on youtube - one of the few people who tell it as it is and hence why he is disliked - no one likes to hear the truth but it is wha tit is in this case!

My mate works about 3 miles from here up at Linn Sonndek and even he says the stuff is well overpriced!
But as he says the name sells the gizmos to the sheep who believe all they read in What-Hifi.

PS. I used to read What Hifi 10 years ago when it was reliable and not funded and paid to review!
You need to get out more - trust no1 dude!
Its a good motto to stand by these days!

Well if you specified what your needs are that would give a clue but having not told us anything its kinda hard to recommend anything!

Size of room - shape?
Wired?
Wireless?
Audio connections?
Expectations ie basic psuedo surround or (socks gone) ie mind blowing cinematic experience!
Been around the £450 mark in the past for those that own time machines.

When it comes to separate home cinema amps and speakers you ain't going to get much for £500,certainly not anything that will satisfy an audiophile,I've spent over £500 on speaker cables alone going back some years, but then they were coming out the back of a £5k THX certified reference amp.

Personally i think sound bars have their place.

Whilst they are no match for a decent amp and speaker set up they certainly appeal to those who want a nice clean install and none of the hassle i,plus the sound is more than adequate for the average punter who wants better sound than their TV can produce.

For a separate home cinema amp and speakers i would say you are looking at around £1k to get a ok sounding entry level setup.

My stuff is old mainly 5.1 so over 10 years old my amp cost £349.95 back then and its still going strong!
All the rest i built or freebied as i am an electronics engineer and repair guy and my workshop is full of the gear.
I build some of my own stuff to save cash but I do have a mixed setup of Cerwin Vega 500 watt fronts Studio Power 250 rears and a just got a new front Wharfedale and use an old Yamaha Sub!

An no i am not an audiophile i have to much else to do i gave up on that nonsense about the same time i gave up overclocking pc's and modding etc all i want is to feel like i am in the cinema when i stick on The Walking Dead and hear those zombos crunching and munching around my ears lol

Haha, can always rely on HUKD for a good laugh. Maybe that's why most porn actresses, "mail" brides and prostitutes come from countries like slovakia, Russia, etc, must be because men take really good care of women over there!
Anyways, about the soundbar, if you can't have speakers around your living room, or simply don't like how they look, then they are defeniely the way to go. Just don't go cheap and expect miracles. I own a Sony HTS5000 and it just blows my mind every time I watch a movie with a Atmos mixture on it. It's just incredible! Not going to debate price, as there's no piece of technology these days that it's not overprice taking into account how much it costs to produce. But this happens with everything and that's how companies have made money since ever!!!

Was thinking the same.

I've had some low end equipment. £300 amp, £150 floorstanders, matching centre, £100 rears. £400 sub.
Switched to a q acoustic soundbar then a Samsung. Absolutely no loss of sound quality or volume. The only thing I'm missing is the low frequency from the sub I had, but at least the neighbours don't complain. Never watched enough films to miss the rear speakers. So I get easily as good audio quality, but less boxes taking up room and using less electricity.
And any audiophile would laugh at a £500 budget. That's a budget amp without speakers.

Small minds think alike!
An electronics engineer tries to tell you the basics and you would rather listen to the trolls.
Confirms what i always say that the UK is full of pea brained PC obsessed sheep who cannot even read - i never said i was an audiophile you just proved what a sheep you are you dont even have the capacity to read properly so will never understand properly either!

Cerwin Vega 500's were £500 each so you also dont ken what you are talking about when it comes to even the basic speakers either but then you are a:-

I am not playing the knowitall
I am just saying that spearates is better than a soundbar and £500 you could get a low end setup for that price.
So what is the problem?
I am also an engineer and repair these things so i ken what the electronics is inside most tv and audio equipment?
If you know a crystal oscillator from an 6835crtc chip then i would be most interested to listen to you.
Ok so you are latino not British so how can you comment on the British male!

Experience dude thats what counts not what you read in what hifi or what your mate told you.
Go to a sound room and listen to an amp setup or even compare two soundbars together and you will learn!
But hey each to their own you dont want to listen to someone who is trying to save the poor folks who come on here and think this is a great deal some cash fair enough i am only trying to help folks find a better cheaper way of getting what they want!
Isnt that the purpose of the site!

omendata, you talk alot.

He does have a point though. A proper set up with dedicated speakers will sound better. If you have the money and enjoy watching plenty of films buy yourself an amp and at least a 5.1 system. Not only will you get better sound and better sound placement but your amp becomes the heart of your AV setup. Many of these cheaper sound bars won't have Dolby Vision passthrough etc. In buying an amp you are somewhat future proofing yourself. Ideally you should wait until HDMI 2.1 but that's another topic.

I have a Sony DN1080 paired up with Focal Sib Evo Atmos speakers, very good sound to my ears. However, would I recommend the average Joe who only watches soaps and reality TV to spend over £1k on sound. Absolutely not. Waste of money.
Not sure if it's just what I am looking at but some items on Very are (older stock).

This 2018 SK9 soundbar was replaced with the 2019 SL9 Soundbar, and its better.
Just like the laptops on very I was looking at 330 model number this was 2018 and currys don't sell no more, currys only sell the 2019 340 model number.
Some of the items Very are selling seem to be older products, but for a few ££ more you get the 2019 newer product, shop around do your research, but everyone to their own.
