Easy to fit - yes,
if you're replacing a drive with this set the jumper on the back to the same as the one thats coming out: master/slave/cable select.

If you're adding a drive: you'll need to change the jumper on the other IDE/PATA device if it's on the same ribbon so that one is "Slave" and one is "Master"

You can't do any permanent damage if you set it up wrong, the devices won't be recogised by the PC until you correct the jumpers so give it a try yourself.

I agree. For a neat, second optical device install or if you need to replace an existing SATA divice, SATA would be a better choice.

I'm not sure what you mean by better. For optical devices SATA has no speed advantage over PATA. Read/write i/o on an optical device is so slow that PATA can easily cope with the through put.

I'm replacing an existing IDE/PATA device so it's a no brainer for me. A strait swap.

I received my new DVD re-writer yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a retail box with nero and lightscribe software as I was expecting a bare OEM drive. Since I'm replacing a broken drive, I was up and running in under ten minutes.
