Jack the car up, place a stand under each side of the vehicle making sure to position them correctly and lower the jack so the stands support the weight of the vehicle.
Then give the car a good shove at the top of the doors so it is rocking on the suspention, you are trying to push the car off the stands.
If you manage to push the car off the stands then they were positioned incorrectly.
If the stands break chuck them in the bin.
Otherwise you can work safely under the vehicle.
This advice applies whether you have spent £1 or £100 on your axle stands. (edited)

Way better and when your life is in there hands, what’s £7.99. They also extend 5.3cm further, which when doing driveway work is a lot.halfords.com/tools/garage-workshop/axle-stands-trolley-jacks/halfords-advanced-2-tonne-ratchet-axle-stands-657131.htmlThey also have the 3t ones for £25.99. Which would be my choice but then £15.99 difference is a lot. But worth it

The extra money needed for a potential life saving sturdy product is worth it in my opinion.

Is it me or lately alot deals people just complain and try to put you off not everyone can afford 100s of 1000s of pounds worth of better things if they do the job at a good price then surely it's a bargain, getting on my tits a bit understand a bit with this due to safety etc but I bet anyone after axel stands sees these and would buy them rather then spending another 1000 pound for some other ones, makes me laugh with tools surely most tools on here won't be upto a Hamilton's mechanics spec but for home use and 99% of home use would be fine

Are these sufficient for SUVs or 4x4s?

At a guess, that’ll probably depend on whether the SUV or 4x4 in question weighs more than two tonnes. However, I personally wouldn’t lie under any car supported only by these. (edited)

    No.

Don't only use Axle Stands. Stick a few solid steel wheels underneath with some cloth covering the faces as a failsafe.

Or better yet, rent a lift at a self service garage.

Or invest in a QuickJack system and never have to worry about that ever again. (edited)

I owned the cheaper Red Halfords ones for a while but finally invested in the much larger Advanced 3t Jack and then 4 Advanced 3t stands.

Night and day the quality difference. I now wonder why I even went for the cheaper version in the first place.

Being able to Jack the car up higher was truly a god send when I was recently cleaning out the Oil pump filter on the Mrs Ecoboost Fiesta. Who at Ford thought it was a good idea to place the Cam Belt in oil! The bloody thing just sheds and sends clumps of rubber straight into the pumps filter and clogs the darn thing. Never buy an Evoboost at anywhere near high mileage, it’s a ticking time bomb of expensive work.

I just bought a pair that you've suggested as I need to replace the ABS sensor on my civic. Thanks for the advice!

Good stuff! I love mine. I was scared about the release system on these stands but I found to be a non issue. When loaded these would require an absurdly powerful hit to trigger the release system.

Credit to Halford there Advanced Range I’ve always found to be good quality, especially at the price point. Perfect for any drive way mechanic.
I’ve snapped a few tools through improper use, IE using impact wrench and they replaced everything no questions.

These seem pretty good for £10 - better than the non folding for someone who does v occasional work on the car. As for safety, £10 or £100 you’d still back them up with another measure, chocks, leave the jack in place etc.

Remember that when lifting a car you are not lifting the full weight. If you lift 1 corner of a 1.5tonne family car, then you won't be lifting even half that. Don't listen to people saying you need 3tonne stands. Buy the ones that have the spec you need. I personally prefer the design of the rachet ones (the ones linked by someone above at halfords look a decent product). I like these for ease of use. Not because they are safer.

I hear what you're saying, but that video doesn't tell us anything significant. No load testing, nothing.

I'm sure Lidl wouldn't advertise these as 2 tonnes each if they weren't.

It shows me how thin the base metal is, the only thing I think is better on these is the lock pin rather than those awful ratchet ones. (edited)

I have the fixed one from aldi as well. Sounded like hell once after putting a VW Polo on lol. Would strongly advise to use a plan B and stick something else if you rely only on this good luck.
