The BEST film i've ever seen. Excellent just excellent, you will NOT be disappointed

Amazon.co.uk Review Italy's rubber-faced funnyman Roberto Benigni accomplishes the impossible in his World War II comedy Life Is Beautiful: he shapes a simultaneously hilarious and haunting comedy out of the tragedy of the Holocaust. An international sensation and the most successful foreign language film in US history, the picture also earned director-cowriter-star Benigni Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor. He plays the Jewish country boy Guido, a madcap romantic in Mussolini's Italy who wins the heart of his sweetheart (Benigni's real-life sweetie, Nicoletta Braschi) and raises a darling son (the adorable Giorgio Cantarini) in the shadow of fascism. When the Nazis ship the men off to a concentration camp in the waning days of the war, Guido is determined to shelter his son from the evils around them and convinces him they're in an elaborate contest to win (of all things) a tank. Guido tirelessly maintains the ruse with comic ingenuity, even as the horrors escalate and the camp's population continues to dwindle--all the more impetus to keep his son safe, secure and, most of all, hidden. Benigni walks a fine line mining comedy from tragedy and his efforts are pure fantasy--he accomplishes feats no man could realistically pull off--both of which have drawn fire from a few critics. Yet for all its wacky humour and inventive gags, Life Is Beautiful is a moving and poignant tale of one father's sacrifice to save not just his young son's life but his innocence in the face of one of the most evil acts ever perpetrated by the human race.

My other favourite is completely different.

Requiem for a Dream

Another film I really like that is similar in genre (other than setting) and such to this is Reign Over Me.

Oh, cool. I have Requiem for a Dream sat here, but haven't got around to watching it yet. I will check it out for sure.

Very good film and very good price.

Excellent film have it on video tape and DVD.

Without wishing to hijack this thread, I'd like to thank RusstheWomble for reminding me to search for the Blu-ray release of this excellent movie - normally a fruitless task but now I see that the Blu-ray is indeed due for release next month (on the 21st), albeit region A only. It's £10.99 delivered from PlayUSA.com if anyone else is interested.

Watch it closely because you'll be glad you watched it but you'll never want to watch it again ha ha

I watched the first hour and though "this is really nice and uplifting" and then...

But a wonderful film, really recommended!

Disagree. I've watched it a bunch of times.

Requiem is probably Aranaofsky's most brutal film, not a movie to watch with mother! This represents the 'body' in his mind, body, soul trilogy. 'Pi' being the mind, and 'The Fountain' being the soul.

Ass to Ass!!!

Ass to Ass alone makes it "not one to watch with mother".

Life is Beautiful though, definately get family and friends to watch it, as long as they're not the type to keep moaning about subtitles and ask you to rewind because they "couldn't read it in time". Arg!

Is it a sub-titled film?

oops!

Original Poster

Yeah it's subtitled

Thank you. Can't wait to watch it. Bril price
