If you want a good learning App which is free, or you can pay for the premium normally £25 for a year with discounts.

memrise.com or get the App from Google play

Top tip get the free app then they offer you the premium for half price when you have signed up after a while.

I have still got the free version loads of content.

Laura Ashley had managed fine since 1954. And Debenhams had managed fine …Laura Ashley had managed fine since 1954. And Debenhams had managed fine since 1778! Huge numbers of firms are about to go to the wall. I would have very little faith in a tech company still being here in 5 years. They have an even shorter shelf life. And I would bet millions that you won't be able to use a Rosetta Stone Windows 10 software you bought back in 2020 when you are drawing your pension...

Weird
They don't own multiple shops paying huge amounts of rent and overheads, hiring staff for said shops.

Rely on customers going in to the shop... It's all online. So I'd have more faith than Laura Ashley

I'll set a date in my calendar for 5year and give you a shout

Not bad. But a one year subscription is far better value at current price of £79 (unless you want the two things it comes with).

Lifetime subscriptions are a marketing con, anyway...
Depends how long you think you'll be using it I suppose. I've been using Duolingo for 4+years and expect at least the same out of this
Sort of true. But very few companies last 5 years let alone a lifetime. Rosetta Stone could easily go out of business. Think how many bigger brand names have gone to the wall and this economic depression won't help.

And will a computer in 5 years time even be compatible?

And most people - appreciate you are far more diligent than the average - use something like a lot at first and then life gets in the way and they stop finding time.
My mistake, hadn't realised it's for 24 languages. Might be worth adding to the description.

In which case it's tremendous value...if you use it.

Rosetta stone was an early started in the self learning of languages. Now with duolingo competition they could be in a hard place. I used both to learn languages.
What do they mean by 1 active? If you switch languages does it erase all your progress (if it works like Duolingo, I don't mean wiping your memory)

The trouble with Rosetta Stone other than the high price, if I recall from years back, is it is heavily templated.

So you have the same images etc if you are learning Korean as if you are learning Italian. No cultural reference points.

It's also pretty 'stiff' and robotic, not very engaging at all. I suppose it might have improved.

Great tip on Memrise.

I found Fluenz to be great too, much better than RS.
Memrise, Ankidroid and Michel Thomas for me
I think I will start with my collection of MosaLingua Premium before I spend money.
If only they offered Thai. Heat good price
Great deal, have some heat.
I'm finding Duolingo (free) better not impressed with RS. RS also free for the time being, so would hang fire on that as likely come down further anyway.

Please do! Rosetta Stone has never been very good, is now massively threatened by new entrants like Duolingo (which is FREE vs extremely expensive).

Rosetta Stone is in trouble and can adapt or die. It will die in the same way as other businesses that are too slow to adapt will.

It is unlikely to be around in 5 years and I doubt a 5 year old bit of software will still work.

Not impressed. Chinese language? erm, ok Cantonese or Mandarin?

Same issue applies to Rossetta Stone - Chinese - these people are suppiosed to be experts, so give us a clue Mandarin or Cantonese

The differences are huge and someone who speaks Cantonese will not understand someone who speaks mandarin.

FSI teaches Standard Chinese which is spoken by the majority of Chinese nationals, this is what we commonly know as Mandarin. Mandarin and Cantonese are tonal languages. Both languages consist of tones which give a different meaning to the same word, Mandarin has 4 possible tones per word and Cantonese has up to 9 tones per word. A bit of trivia that I like is that the word Cantonese contains the words tones (Cantonese). There's also traditional and simplified Chinese and simplified is what most younger Chinese speak. There's caveats to the above but I want to resist getting more boring than is required.

Anyway have fun if you try Chinese, it's particularly challenging to people who know European languages.
I can't pretend to be an expert but language learning sites / forums almost universally think Rosetta stone is pretty terrible. Babel, memrise and anki all tend to be held in far higher regard.

I strongly recommended you check out the "language learning" subreddit before committing to Rosetta stone.

I don't think you should view it like that.

I'm not seriously expecting lifetime usage - but if you plan to use for 2+ years (in some cases even less), the 'Lifetime' version makes sense.
Been trialling Rosetta Stone for a week and finding it’s awful because it’s got no English and assumes you remember everything which is never going to happen. I have tried their teacher session which was awful - they allow 5 students and with poor internet and everyone trying to speak at once or not understanding, I simply dropped out as it was useless.
Memrise is fantastic and far more intuitive- and free (no need to pay for the upgrade).
I’m going to cancel my Rosetta Stone membership (can do within first 30 days).

2 years is £129.

This is £146.
Tried getting into Rosetta Stone a few times but no matter how long I wait, no Welsh! Duolingo however offering some great stuff at the moment.

What are you on about, stop copying wiki.

Actually, Mandarin and Cantonese are classed as seperate languages that use the same characters.

As I said someone who speaks Cantonese wont understand mandarin. I should know my wife is of Hong Kong decendency and obviously speaks Cantonese.

For me learning mandarin is pointless until I've learnt Cantonese.

Cantonese and mandarin are not too different. The grammar is the same except for certain spoken grammar and the more complex words are very similar/ almost identical.

Usually mandarin is best to learn first as it's easier to pronounce and remember and its complementary to learning Cantonese. But I can appreciate why you'd want to start with Cantonese first in your case.
I got Rosetta recently when it was free- after 2 wks I’ve got fed up with it and deleted it. The iOS app is not good, I’ve reported plenty of issues, it’s now just blank. The website doesn’t sync with app and vice versa though it says it does in the faq. Sometimes doesn’t hear you, most ‘listening’ modules, where it speaks a phrase and you match the picture, misses out saying the first couple of words which is vital in french at least. You can tell it’s a fault how it cuts in at an odd moment. I’d be absolutely furious if I’d paid for it.
