Thanks op, been looking at these for a while, this has made me push the button.

Fantastic price, in actual fact looked at this only yesterday as I was think of upgrading from the ASUS AC-3200 (Merlin Firmware) with this, what are peoples thoughts?

Voted HOT and thank you OP.

Would this be a big improvement on a bt home hub 6?

I can't help you with that. I have a Virgin Hub 3 which had limited range and functionality so bought a Linksys EA6900 and used it as the router and switched the Hub 3 to modem mode. Took a little time to get the firmware upgrade correct but there are some good tutorials / guides on DD WRT. Functionality is great can now use VPN and connected portable HDD to share video / music content throughout the network.

See: community.bt.com/t5/…e/2

and: dd-wrt.com/sit…ase

Update firmware at your own risk - you could brick the router

Yes BT kit is by far the worst I’ve used, close to sky kit.... terrible

I'm also looking to use the VirginMedia H3 as a modem. I'm not a gamer but do like 'smart home' technology.

Is this future proof ish

I have the 1900ACS (younger brother) plugged into an EE fibre modem. The 1900 is rock solid router, fantastic WiFi range. This 3200 can only be better. Recommended

Wow Linksys have actually changed their neolithic dinosaur user interface, it can't rival an Asus for looks but it's better looking than the ancient crap they used to use.

Voted hot for what it is and can offer.

I like that it has dual firmware capability, if one corrupts. Just be careful not to overwrite the std firmware.
For me tho it is DD-WRT isf you want a VPN client and due to my weak and feeble brain I would miss the relative ease of using a AsusWRT-Merlin based UI.
The Asus RT-AC86U is probably more capable than this router when used as with an OpenVPN client.
I do like the config of the Asus with the Merlin firmware, policy based routing for devices through the VPN tunnel and the rest through the WAN, with a kill switch configured, is easy to setup.

When I had a R77800 (DD-WRT) I was following the DD-WRT development for the Linksys router and it used to have some wireless issues when using DD-WRT. It might be worth checking out how that development went.

The RT-AC86U is quite new and costs more but for me and my prefernce for the asus UI I would have paid the differnce just for that.

Heat added as it is a good price for what it offers.

The BT home hub actually has pretty decent range, so if you are having problems getting a connection from a distance this may not be the best option by itself.

What the BT home hub is bad at mainly is connection stability. Connections aren't stable and you get disconnections and fluctuations in speed. It also has limited customisation, but that's not a factor for most people.

So I would recommend to replace the BT router (or virgin router for that matter) , but don't expect the wireless range to increase dramatically.

The Asus rt-ac86u is £129:

I was mentioning the RT-AC86U and not the ASUS RT-AC68U. But for range I have found that since I lost the ability to "amplify" the wireless signal in my old R7000, something to do with how Wi-Fi strength is now regulated at a lower power, I use a wired AP on the upper levels of our house for extended wireless coverage.

My needs for choosing the 86U was its VPN client capability.

Ah, soz. Gone for this Linksys, to use with Virgin Pooperhub 3

I received mine (to replace virgin sh3). Very similar range but much worse speed. Might be something I screwed up or a setting but I was getting my actual speed of 200mbs when sitting next to sh3 and now when in modem mode and WiFi from linksys I max out at about 60. Given the range is also only marginally better, mine will be going back.
