Might help if you're unsure if this Tablet is good for you techradar.com/rev…x64

sorry to hijack the thread, i'm looking for something pretty similar to this but could do with 8gb RAM (or more if possible!) any ideas that won't break the bank?

You need to avoid the Atom CPUs (the CPU is not the bad part) it is the storage controller is stuck with eMMC which is dog slow.

The Microsoft Surface 3 had a similar Atom, despite a great screen and more RAM overall performance wall killed by the storage speed.

Try a refurbished Dell or something similar, ensure it has a warranty.

I have an acer aspire 12 and think its great.....but the littlen has asked for a laptop / tablet for crimbo. Hes only 8. Are these ok for bog standard youtube / films / music etc? He has a ps4 and a small 7" tabley for games so thats not a worry

Performance wise yes but speaker is very tinny and not very loud (fine in a quiet room). You can plug headphones in and/or add external speaker if you want a bit of volume/bass, either via wire or Bluetooth. I have one and have ordered another today for one of my children, for the same reason as you mention.

Sorry to hear that. I've had my second delivered today. Both came within a couple of days though memory cards arrived separately both times. Hope they sort yours out and reimburse you for the extra delivery cost.

I also ordered this last week with the 64gb microsd card. Personally, I think this is a little too big for a child, you would be better off with a 10" Tablet, for movies, youtube, etc. I find this is also a little heavy and may easily be dropped by kids, due to the size and weight.

Nice laptop though. The keyboard may even be better than the Surface 2 RT one I have.

32GB is not enough for a tablet.

Anything better around for a similar price?

Is this better than the 14" linx laptop from Tesco for £249?

Hi. It's 64Gb built in and an additional 32Gb micro SD card you can slot in. I think it can support up to 128Gb micro SD card, if you want to add more. It also has slots for normal size SD card and also USB, so plenty of options to expand the storage.

It's a painfully slow processor although RAM will be enough. If anyone isn't familiar with the cpubenchmark site, I recommend they have a look. I'd recommend the processor should be 1700 minimum cpubenchmark.net/cpu…GHz

To be fair though, I haven't actually tried this device so won't vote either way. Thanks for the find though OP.

Hi. I was worried about the responsiveness but it's fine with general type use.. Internet (Edge), playing videos (either on screen or via the HDMI), Email, Word Processing, Spreadsheet etc (I installed Office 2010 and Word, Excel and Powerpoint all run fine). I also installed ITunes and that runs fine too. If you want a Tablet style PC this is worth considering if you don't intend to run power hungry software (e.g. newer games).

Thanks for the response. Forget anything PS3 standard or over with gaming. It just won't handle it. Have you tried light photo editing on it as again, I'd be surprised if this was capable. To be fair, it is a tablet which are generally designed for web and in your case, office work. Personally, I would go for an Android tablet with a separate bluetooth keyboard. Appreciate a users perspective though so thanks for your post +1

Happy to help. Have got a lot from HUKDs in the past so want to give something back to other users, if I can.

I just tried Paint 3D and loaded a pic and messed around a bit editing. Not something I do so can't say it's representative but it worked ok. If you've got something specific you want me to try, just let me know...?

Same for me! By the time it arrives I imagine the price will have dropped everywhere else! As usual the chumps at Microsoft support can't even tell you if there is stock.

Had enough with them now... phoned about 5 times and no one can ever tell me anything, they just promise a call back next day which doesn't happen. I've told them to cancel the order now, which at first they said was impossible. Will update as soon as I hear anything. Hopefully If anything, I've scored a free 64gb card, and get the order cancelled

Hi. I think the only downside for a writer is the keyboard. It's not bad for a portable unit but thinking a full size would be better for your needs. You can plug a full size in or connect via Bluetooth though, if you do go for this one.

thank you

I use a Linx tablet (1010) - it is very good indeed so I have voted hot (although I don't know this particular product).

This was £199 in Sainsbury's a few months ago right (without the microSD card)?

I think that was the earlier model (12V64) though I don't know what (if any) differences there are between the two.

I think you're right. Voted hot since this is a good price.

I got this (or the V version not sure) in Sainsbury's last Xmas for £199 ish.

Out of the box it had a few issues, and I believe a few folk sent them back, etc, I was tempted, but I stuck with it, updated, etc, and it's been a pretty good purchase, especially for the money.

The screen is great, as is the keyboard cover that comes with it and is very nippy for simple tasks such as browsing etc and playing old games.

One issue with it I did have is how quiet the speakers are, very very low which kind of hampered its use as a media player for me (of course could plug in headphones or use Bluetooth speakers which both give off good loud sound).

It's a good purchase though and the rare times I need to use Windows it's what I have turned to rather than my bulkier laptop which cost me three times as much.

I feel your pain! Ordered one back on the 16th of October, arrived a week later, only to find it was dead on arrival and wouldn’t turn on no matter what I did. Then sent it back and was promised a new one by today (Tuesday) which hasn’t happened. Logged in to see what’s going on and it still hasn’t even been dispatched yet! No one in Microsoft knows what they’re on about and can tell me any more info!
I asked for a refund and for them to cancel my order, and despite the package having not even left their warehouse yet, they say they can’t cancel the order. And in order for me to get a refund, I’ll have to wait for it to arrive, then send it back, wait another week for them to receive, then probably another week for them to get their act together to issue a refund, then another 5 days for money to be back in my account. Absolutely rubbish customer service!!

Sorry to hear - it's crazy sometimes how large organisations work (or don't, as in this case) where different departments have conflicting procedures. Even worse when that is customer facing and doesn't give good customer service / experience! Shame they could not sort it out quickly because I think you would have been happy with the machine, if they managed to deliver you a working one quickly.

It's nuts!! Even more nuts to know I'm not the only one to be messed about by them! The main reason I want a refund is I've now waited long enough, and black Friday is upon us soon, and no doubt this will be on offer for a cheaper price elsewhere! I hope you get your device soon and in good working order!

Don't blame you for feeling that way - I would too. I've had two come (purchased on different dates) without any issues but I know at least one other on this thread didn't have a good experience, so you're definitely not the only one. Good luck getting a better deal soon. If I spot anything I'll post it and also reply on this thread so you'll be informed
