Manufacturer's Description
The eTDU108 is an ideal solution for those who own a notebook that doesn’t have an optical drive included, but who still want to playback content, access data or install software from CD or DVD discs.
Portability is the key for this new external DVD-ROM drive, which suits the mobile user. Power supply comes directly from the notebook through the enclosed USB cable, so there is no need to be close to a power socket to operate the drive. And with less than 300 grams, this lightweight device fits easily in any small (notebook) bag.

The drive reads DVD±R discs at 8X maximum, Double Layer and rewriteable DVD±R discs at 6X maximum and CD (-ROM, -R & -RW) at 24X.

These are getting nicely cheap at the moment. Same price at play.com too, here's the link:

Voted hot, btw. I'd rather order from amazon than those shysters at play any day of the week, since you've more chance of it actually being sent out.

Good price for a dvd writer. Got to say though that i've had several netbooks and ultraportables over the last two years and never needed one. CD/DVD's are so noughties, they're steadily going the way of the dodo and video tape, so l dont expect them to be around much longer.

Fair point, but it does make it so much easier to put your CD collection on itunes.

Ordered. Heat added. Thanks

There was a LG drive once, for £20.74 delivered. Unfortunately eBuyer claimed it to be a miss-price and only 1 or 2 people actually got their hands on it. So yeah, that price is best available - to dontASCIIme's knowledge.

Nope, sorry. I do have 2 of the drives left on the shelf, so can have a look.

Just checked the thread, I can see your post but inbox has no msg from you.

It maybe was that I asked in in open forum/thread as you mention above

These have always been this price...I paid the same price 6 months ago for the same thing!

Was reliable to and worked flawlessly from USB without any other power source, and worked from netbooks also!

I bought this from base.com at 8am this morning, had dispatched via royal mail first class but 10am. And quidco as well.

The Viewsonic enclosure appears to contain a LG drive...
