Aren't most PC\laptop mice ambidextrous.....?

Nope, a surprising amount of mice are shaped to fit the right hand, particularly those with extra buttons etc which often sit under the thumb on the left of the mouse for right-handed use. it's a struggle to find one I can use left-handed. (I use the extra buttons for back/forward/copy/paste a lot)
Unless specially purchased as left or right mice, all the ones I have installed\used have been anyhanded, you then configure it in Windows, which is very annoying when using one someone has set it up for left handed and your right handed
