I'd steer well clear of these. Had two sets of these fall apart in the last year at school. X-mini things are much better value (and well-built).

do I have to buy a pair of x-mini to get better sound?

Well, funnily enough I don't live in a school and the build quality of these is excellent. These are the best budget non-2.1 speakers I've used in a while, better than the Trust ones etc., and I'm a system builder who bundles speakers with systems (yes, even budget ones!). You can actually hear some low frequency sound out of these, and the treble is just right. Very well balanced for a budget set.

Have these as well, would not buy again. Firstly, one of the two speakers (the one that does not have the power transformation module in it) is too light for stability and topples over too easily. Secondly, the black front metal mesh bits are not very well fitted. Mine started to come off after a few weeks. Pushing them back in does not result in their staying in place. Sound is good though.
