seem to be an updated version of the old X-530s which were a great little 5.1 set up

Treat yourself to genuine cinema sound at home with the X-540 5.1 loudspeaker system!
With a total power of 7 W RMS, the X-540 system includes 4 satellite speakers, 1 central speaker and a 25 W RMS subwoofer.
The double transducer satellite loudspeakers use FDD2 technology to eliminate the sound defaults of traditional speakers.
The subwoofer is equipped with a dynamic equaliser that emphasises bass while minimising sound deformation and high-volume distortion.
Finally, the X-540 loudspeakers have a headphones line-in for individual listening.
The X-540 system constitutes a complete audio system that combines design, power and sound quality to bring incredible game and film realism into the heart of your home!

are there any newer alternatives?

Not bad, but very bass-heavy, even with the sub on minimum, if the earlier X-530 set is anything to go by.

Logitech's FDD is merely a crossover in the satellite units so that the two identical speakers cover different parts of the frequency spectrum and so their output doesn't destructively interfere with each other as much as if they both output identical ranges.
