London Improved Bus Hopper Fare (now UNLIMITED for £1.50 per hour)

Launched today, the improved Hopper fare now allows you to make unlimited pay as you go bus and tram journeys within one hour of first touching in, all for £1.50.

Make a journey using pay as you go (contactless or Oyster) on a bus or tram, and you can now make unlimited bus and tram journeys for free within one hour of first touching in.

Touch in using the same card on all the bus and tram journeys you make and the free fares will be applied automatically.

Hopper fares apply to all pay as you go journeys.

You can now travel on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line, River Bus or National Rail services between Hopper journeys, and Hopper fares will still apply.

Hopper fares will not apply if your Oyster card has a negative pay as you go balance after the first journey. If you clear the negative balance within one hour of touching in, subsequent journeys made within the hour will still be free..

Because this is designed for awkward single journeys where you cannot get somewhere without taking two or more buses. In general you should be able to get on the second/third bus within an hour.
This isn't meant to be a free chance for a return ticket.

don't know how I missed it - will add heat there too!
Not sure how it works with tube fares as they have different pricing.

The daily Oyster/contactless cap should remain the same. The only difference is if you take multiple buses within 1 hour of the first one, you don't get charged extra £1.50 for each one anymore. Previously it was only the next bus within an hour, now it's unlimited within that hour. It'll make a difference to regular commuters for sure.
Very good to know, and for sure a lot of people who commute using buses will greatly benefit (me included)!

For Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line, River Bus or National Rail services to be included does that mean you must start the journey with a bus or tram?

The hopper fare will apply to the bus parts only, you'll still have to pay for the other parts. E.g. Bus, air-line, bus will count as 1 bus fare and 1 air-line fare, it won't 'break' the hopper fare.

Now, if only my average bus trip in the middle of the traffic wasn't about 30/45 minutes
If only rural busses had something similar, a trip into town for me (6 miles) is £15 on two busses.

Nice incremental improvement for people in london

The buses have to be subsidised as it is, before effectively throwing a free return leg journey into the mix!

The 1 hour hopper fare is as much about being fairer to bus users as it is about saving a minority of bus users a fare or two here and there (before the hopper bus users were paying when switching buses to make what was really one point-to-point journey, whilst those using most other TFL services were able to switch lines and trains without the same penalty).

Whilst of course it could be argued that those non-bus TFL passengers pay more as they cross fare zones, I suspect most bus journeys are within one or two zones only (even given the unlimited one hour hopper feature).

Your not saving much anyway because when you go visit someone or go shopping centre you will plan to stay for a few hours. With 1 hour you will be rushing which is never a good predicament to be in
An hour in London traffic
But still good for sightseeing I guess
how about london tube peak timings ? still charged £1.50 ?
Oh if only people knew the damage behind the scenes this is causing. Won't be long before bus routes in London are scrapped because there is no money, as the dumb ass mayor is giving people free rides. All good now but when the money runs out, people will moan that their buses have been cut. You don't get anything free in this world!!

Hence why they stated "single journeys" - it is not designed to replace regular returns/travelcard fares. However you could use this as 2 singles for £3, but then you'll pay whatever's cheaper anyway with oyster/contactless.

Bus travel is at a flat rate of £1.50 irrespective of the time of the day.

There is a 10 min grace period, so the usable time is 70 mins. I have personally benefitted from it.

The fare freeze for 4 years has already strained the TfL budget with planned upgrades delayed. Of course, salary still went through for Tube drivers thanks to multiple strikes.

i didn't understood bozo007, I will try to explain it briefly. say am …i didn't understood bozo007, I will try to explain it briefly. say am starting my journey around 9:00 am by catching a bus and reach 9:20 to a nearest tube station, and catch a tube at 9:23 am ( peak time charge ) going to central London, get down at a station at 9:42 and catch a bus at 9:49 and finish of my journey 10:04.normally tube train has peak and off peak charges, where, if you intend to travel before 9:30 am you will be charged at peak rates and it comes to off peak after 9:30 am.In the above travel case am taking a tube at 9:23 am ,so its peak( normal peak time charge is £3.90). My question is will i get benefit of unlimited hopper fare of £1.50 because all of my journey covered in an hour even when i travel at peak time in tube ?

Hi you will be charged £1.50 + £3.90 totalling £5.40 if that makes it any clear!

Also it’s worth noting that on the old Hopper fare you couldn’t switch from bus-tube-bus again and benefit. As of today it seems you can
This is fantastic, no more multiple fares to get between hospitals, just £1.50 and even if the next bus is late you are still quids in. Most of London is accessible within an hour if you use a combination of public transport, busses are cheaper but take longer. This makes them even more cheaper.
Unltd travel for 1hr, now you can travel 2 stops instead of just 1 ! .
Maybe they could put connecting doors like on trains, then when you're in the queue to get over a Thames bridge and the Bus lane is gone thanks to Boris' cycle lanes you could just walk through all the empty buses to the front of the gridlock.

Trains and Trams are two different modes of transport. This is only applies to Buses & Trams

I want to make max use of this, spending only £1.50 on bus.

I knew with the old hopper fare, the longest distance you could travel was by taking the X26 bus (Heathrow to West Croydon) plus another connecting bus (which I think was to Central London).

Has any savvy HotUKDealers managed to work out wok the longest distance you can travel with unlimited £1.50 hopper fare?
works for me
Mayor Sadiq khan is taking good steps .
