When is the next one of these Great Escape offers?

Taksim_Red

I'm using this + Family railcard to take my son down to London for the Arsenal vs. Liverpool cup game Sunday after next. The local coach company wanted £34 day return each, with no child concessions, but with Great Escape we're going down Saturday morning now and staying over two nights and only paying £23.80 in total for travel. Two nights in the Ibis Budget in Barking was just £78. So thanks to this deal it's only costing me £35 more to make a weekend of it!

krazykizza

You can't. My comment was referring to season ticket holders of an FCC kind.

Valiantcat

Kizza, How do season ticket holders claim the two off peak returns on London Midland?

krazykizza

Once had a pack of five returns from FCC for no expense outlay. Though tey were issued in December, giving little time to be used. Also, anyone with a season on this network can claim two free off peak returns too. East Coast are even more generous and offer a bunch of five and points per pound spent.

Fantastic deal thanks! Having checked the routes, I found for my particular journey that it was cheaper to book advance tickets rather than take up this deal so might be worth checking before you do this. However, when booking in advance you are limited to particular trains etc. so if you need the freedom to roam this is a great deal! Thanks for posting - I am now looking forward to a day out at Stratford upon Avon as a result of your post :-)

Got myself one - planning on Day trip to London with kids on Saturday, Crewe 07:55 Euston 09:46 . Coming back Sat night @ 8pm (ish)... Belting deal :-)

mk-donald

Simple to check their timetables - actually just under 2hours for an hourly service weekday at xx:33 -> xx+2:30. BTW: Watford Junction to Liverpool is actually 4 hours not 6 each way, definitely not a time effective journey, unless the cost is right. The fastest journey is usually via Euston & Virgin and taking 2h45m anyway and would need to get an Advance for a specific train to save much on the £15. An off-peak single being £76+, makes the £15 seem cheap!

livreg

good deal for cost but the trains are slower and packed in evening peak time the times I've used this offer before. Still booked again though.

Holte_ender

Great if you havent got a car. me 2 x adults + 2 x kids = £50 against fuel for 240 miles (inc return journey) @ £25. Parking for a day at station on London outskirts £1. And the government wonders why so many people still insist on using cars.... Having said that, its still cheaper than most if not all deals at the mo and it covers the network. Heat added.

I agree with the previous comment. Based on recent empty promises on recruiting more drivers to stem the continual flow of cancelled, delayed and overcrowded trains you might want to think twice before committing yourself to journey that has a significant chance of being disrupted.

Hodgey

Living where I do I rely on London Midland trains. There are more delayed and cancelled than run on time so what appears to be a very good offer is unlikely to be. For that reason I won't vote hot but for your efforts neither will I vote cold.

iglimpse

Had I booked in advance, can get deals on Virgin and same journey approx 2hr 20mins. There are lots of deals to be had when you can plan and book in advance. My situation was very last minute and Irish funerals and other life events mean sometimes things need to be arranged quickly. Only decided today I had to get to London for funeral tomorrow. Left Lpool, changed at Stafford and journey took 3hr 25mins. Later trains went via Bham and took 4+hrs. Still less than coach time which seemed like my only option at the time. I was very fortunate to find myself a great deal, just when I needed it, rare for me and I hope others might be able to use it. Cracking deal at short notice and that is rare.

Terms & conditions of promotion: 1.The Great Escape ticket allows one day’s unlimited off-peak travel on all London Midland train services. Travel is not permitted on any other train operator’s services. 2.Great Escape tickets can be used all day at weekends or after 0930 on weekdays, although no restrictions apply within the Network West Midlands zones 1-5. There are no restrictions for southbound journeys between Liverpool and Crewe on any day. If you're travelling to London from stations north of Rugby, you can also use the 0833 Crewe-Euston train. Customers from Rugby (0904) , Nuneaton (0917) and Atherstone (0923) can also travel on the train that arrives into Crewe at 1038. 3.If you are travelling from London Euston between 1600 - 1900 in the week, you will need to pay a supplement of £5 per person (£2.50 child) before boarding the train unless you have a 1st class ticket which has no evening restrictions. This supplement will be available from ticket offices when you buy your ticket, at the London Midland/ Virgin Trains ticket offices at Euston before you catch your train home or from the conductor on your train to London. 4.You must specify the date you wish to travel on the application form (between 22 October and 6 November 2011). 5.To obtain your ticket(s), you will need to hand in your Great Escape voucher (and pay the appropriate fare) at any ticket office on the London Midland network. You won’t be able to buy Great Escape tickets over the telephone or online, and no tickets will be issued without a voucher. If you are exchanging your voucher on the day of travel and there are no ticket office facilities at your station, you may purchase your ticket from the conductor on board the train. 6.The number of tickets that you are entitled to buy (and the date of travel) will be printed on your Great Escape voucher. You may buy fewer, as long as at least one adult is travelling. 7.There is no limit on the number of ticket applications that can be made. 8.There is a quota of tickets available each day and once this has been reached, the date will be removed from the 'drop down' list. 9.Vouchers ordered by telephone will be sent using first class post. We cannot guarantee that the voucher will arrive in time for your journey. 10.If you’re leaving London Euston between 1540-1900hrs, you will need to pay a supplement of £5 per person (£2.50 child) before boarding the train. This supplement will be available from ticket offices (including Euston) from 7 February up until the day of travel, or from the conductor on your train into London. 11.Please check train times before travelling to ensure your journey is not affected by engineering works. 12.First class is only available on certain routes. If you buy a first class ticket, please check that first class is available for the journey you are making. 13.The Great Escape voucher is not transferable and has no monetary value. 14.We reserve the right to amend or cancel the promotion at any time (although vouchers already printed would be honoured in such circumstances). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only tickets that are half price are journeys via London Midland. Journeys between anywhere on this map are applicable for the saving. Quite A Large Image I must stress that you have to travel on a London Midland service, otherwise your ticket is invalid, all the sale tickets have on them LM ONLY. If you were to travel between Birmingham New Street and London Euston on this ticket onboard one of Mr Branson's trains you would have to pay for a new open standard single at at least £70. Journeys with LM are usually an hour longer, but the trains are air conditioned and comfortable, though from the 27th August no catering will be provided on board, so stock up before you leave! If travelling at the weekend, get a Super Off Peak, cheaper than an off peak and valid on all trains, though on the weekdays Super Off Peaks are severely restricted to the trains you can travel on. If going From New Street to Euston and anywhere between, there are two trains an hour, one is 'direct' whereas the other goes to Northampton, with the same unit forming an onwards journey to London Euston.

Great deal, travelling from the North West LM is not as fast as Virgin but is a whole lot cheaper and even better at half the cost.. I have booked (and received) half price tickets for travel to London for £19.50 return in October and November on this deal so there may be a glitch in their system as the website says travel out before 23 September.

Thomas93

^^ if you need to be there before 7:30am not a chance with the train. Besides you should be looking at Arriva Cross Country trains, this is the wrong deal for you :) Ickle bit of advice for those going down to London, LM share the rails with Virgin trains for most journeys, who are quicker but more expensive. VT will show up on their journey planner too, so to get london midland only results between Liverpool/Crewe/Birmingham and London Euston put in Via Northampton.

shirlsky

Voted hot as it is good value if you happen to use London Midland - cheaper than the coach and no need to book that far in advance

oksqaavlie

It's not that good a deal. It's only valid on routes marked as "London Midland Only" on the ticket. Which isn't many routes.

And boy does their service* deserve to be discounted *service is a very loose term, being a commuter using their line

Either they have changed the deal or your post is wrong ... but it's from the 28th December.

Thanks will check this out...

The voucher is only valid on the London Midland network so you would need to purchase another ticket for the the non London Midland part of the route.

sasha1

Does anyone know - is the voucher valid for any route you can book through them, or specifically just London-Midland trains? eg, if I want to get to Nottingham, these guys let me book the journey, but the London Midland train only goes half way, then I guess I change onto another company's trains. Will the voucher still be valid for the whole journey? Thanks all!

Bear in mind that this is off-peak only. It's not about to halve the cost of your commute!

Thanks for this. I knew Virgin went between Birmingham and Euston, I did not realise London Midland did. However, looking at their timetable, because they go via Northampton the journey times between Birmingham and Euston are at least 2 hours and 15 minutes (sometimes more). This compares with Virgin doing it in about 1 hour 20 minutes on some journeys. However if you are not in a hurry this a decent alternative. Of course you can also do Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone using Chiltern railways, and they have some good deals also (London to Birmingham for £5 for example - see web site) http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/

This helped me find a flexible return from Liverpool to London for £6.60 return (railcard discount applied) so it's an awesome deal if you're travelling between those dates. I'm surprised this deal was forgotten about because people are clearly missing out. I only found it via search.

I must admit I would be a bit annoyed to buy a ticket only to find network rail are on strike. They are on the news at the moment planning numerous strikes over Easter and unlike airports, sleeping in train stations is nowhere near as comfortable.:whistling: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-transport/7480182/Rail-strike-threat-over-Easter.html

Yes you can, but only on a London Midland train NOT a Virgin train. The Virgin train is much faster and the London Midland trains stop at many more stations. I'm going from Stoke-on-Trent to London and back again with my voucher.

£20 for a first-class return, £10 for a normal return...sweet !...can't see how you can't see how it would help him. I could see how it could from here....you see ;-) £10 for a return train compared to £6 on a coach, sitting for hours in traffic with the smell of students. old ladies and buckfast to enjoy ..know which one I'd choose :whistling:
