He called himself Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, because he dared not believe in the strange alternative world on which he suddenly found himself - the Land.

But the Land tempted him. As a leper, in his own world he had been an outcast, unclean, a pariah. Now he was regarded as a saviour, the reincarnation of the Land's greatest hero - Berek Halfhand. Only the mystic powers of the white gold he carried could protect the Lords of the Land from the ancient evil of the Despiser, Lord Foul.

Yet Thomas Covenant had no idea how those powers could be tapped . . .

I remember this being hard to get into (and then some), but well worth it.
Absolute classic. Heat added.
Tried to read this years ago. Couldn't relate to the main character at all and it was one of the few books I have abandoned.

If you couldn't relate to him, you were doing it right! I pretty much hated him right through the first 6 books, still do and I re-read them every 5 years or so.
Awesome trilogy..the second trilogy was a bit harder work..the first three though I enjoyed more than LOTR!

I could not bear the protagonist. I dropped the book shortly after he raped the daughter of the family that saved him. Loathsome character.
Love everything that Donaldson has written but he doesn't write easy books. Haven't reread these in a while...
Read all these as a kid and reread years later. This one (the first one) is a bit slow to get into but its worth it. The second one (Illearth War) is amazing. Dont go beyond the original 6 books though trust me!

Dont read the Gap series by Donaldson then! They are great as well but best not read by Harry Pothead fans or easily offended millenials!

Not all characters have to be nice...would be very dull if they were.

Didn't have any intention to, but I still appreciate the heads up.
I'm in the u k le guinn, alliette de bodard, Terry pratchett field, (amongst many other) I'm ok with flawed protagonists, I just found this one utterly distasteful...

Oddly enough I much preferred those. Maybe because we weren't being asked to empathise with a rapist.

Yeah, not a major one, though. Possibly regardable as a warning rather than a spoiler. A lot of folk -and it's got nothing to do with being easily offended or a millennial or that dismissive stuff above- would find the character unrelatable, despicable and not one we want to read about.
