Bit of an esoteric deal for sure, but those in the know will recognize greatness when they see it! As a comparison, the cheapest decent rival would be an Akai LPK25, which goes for £40 on Amazon. I actually found the build quality of the Rockband Keytar to be considerably better than the Akai, the synth-action keys have a much better feel to them, too.

As I say, probably for a limited audience but it really is a cracking deal.

Bear in mind that the output is a fully-fledged 5 pin MIDI DIN (not usb) so you'd need a MIDI-> USB adapter or other interface for connecting to your computer but it would probably still work out cheaper.

Nice find! I've want to get a cheap MIDI controller for awhile, add a USB adapter and get it for just over £10!! Thanks OP

Didn't really need it but I bought it haha.

any android apps that can take advantage of this?

just keyboard or even keytar

cheers.

Heat for "Esoteric"

Bought one a few years ago for 80's fancy dress for £13. Intended to use it as a MIDI controller afterwards. Still in the box

Keyboard is fantastic in RB3. Such a shame they took it out of RB4.

Should add this is the wii version.

Wii version is common; 360 and ps3 is hard to get.

Hot !!! Will definitely come in handy for Logic X

All gone

oos

If you have a midi-pro adapter, you can then use it in midi mode for RB3 on PS3/360

After the fact, I thought I'd point out that cheap midi cables won't work (as they aren't quite the right spec for the Rockband keyboard):

Those 4 quid cables from Amazon/Ebay aren't up to it. If anyone finds a cheap, working cable, please let others know!

I can do even better!

If you're using Windows, a cable isn't even necessary. Mine functions quite well using the included wireless adapter (which itself functions as a USB hub).

OP here, that's awesome. Thanks for linking! Will check it out tomorrow

i'm glad i checked back as i have one of those cheapo cables. i will be using windows though so hopefully the adapter works

Crap I was on the lookout for a cheap MIDI keyboard... anyone want to sell one to me?

Edit: do all versions of this hardware come with the same dongle?

Edited by: "NikLP" 4th Nov 2016

I received mine today which does not have any midi connection but has a USB dongle.
now I have a new problem.

the pc recognises it as a Harmonix rb3 keyboard for nintendo wii.

the wii buttons are recognised by the pc but the keys are not.

anyone know of a free programming to test this and if I need some kind of.driver or key mapper or something
I used virtual midi keyboard to test it out and nothing.

any chance ideas?

cheers

I tried midi ox as well now.. no joy..
however there is a rb3_driver by Martin sidaway.
the driver is on github.
however there's no link to a compiled version. so I'm stuck again.
any ideas?
cheers

Back in stock at 11.99. I've ordered! Polarbaba, you're saying your keyboard doesn't have MIDI output?

Just after receiving this in the post, can confirm that a cheap ebay midi to usb is not working with the keyboard.

Tried installing the wireless driver as per post above on Windows 10 but not having any luck. Anyone else?

God dammit, bought one for 15 quid the other day, just arrived!

Errr say what? Compiled version for Win in the zip: github.com/mar…ses

Is there actually any difference? The dongle is ugly and the keyboard is blue, but is that subject to change?

Sorry, can you describe exactly how you're setting this up, on what OS, with what software/drivers/other midi devices etc? What's your expectations of it moving forward?

Only if you want to play the game. I had to import my PS3 one from czech republic as couldn't find one anywhere.

If your not playing rock band 3 don't think it matters.

Installed the driver, keyboard now working on Windows 10 64bit, but no input device is shown on FL Studio MIDI settings

Sure, there seems to be pretty comprehensive info here though: github.com/mar…ver. But I think perhaps trying to get this keyboard up and running might be an awkward place to start for those new to MIDI routing.

I'm running the driver on Win 10 64bit. In the rb3_driver settings dialogue I set output to a virtual MIDI port (I'm using LoopBe1, but I think any virtual MIDI port would probably do). The DAW I'm using is Ableton Live 9, with the LoopBe virtual MIDI port set as an input in the preferences. As for other devices, I also have a Novation Launchpad, drum pads, and a DIY controller made with an arduino (since you asked, but I don't feel that those are relevant). The keyboard touch ribbon seems a bit hit and miss, and you might want to mark what buttons on the keyboard do what, but that's the extent of setting up I have to do. It's a nice wireless, velocity sensitive, low-latency keytar for basically nothing. Even the battery life is surprisingly good!

Here's the link to the LoopBe1 free virtual MIDI port. There are probably better ones out there, this is just I happen to be using. nerds.de/en/…tml

I hope this helped.

Just got mine today and it's brilliant! Works well with the above drivers, and the octave buttons and touch panel work well! Keys have a nice feel to them as well.

So are you doing this wirelessly or what? I'm struggling to get a wireless setup sorted. I can get a note out of it using the RB3 driver but only in CLI over the very very slow built in windows stuff. Ideally tho I want a wireless latency-free synth solution in a proper player like Kontact/ a DAW.

For god's sake someone post a complete guide to setting this damn thing up!!

Had the exact same issues! Download LoopBe1 software (posted above) then start the RB3 Driver, and the keyboard should be listed under 4 LoopBe Midi device:, press enter and the keyboard should work fine with a DAW, I have mine setup in FL Studio, works a treat.

Although could anyone tell me what the other buttons do? A and B for example?

thanks to the op and all the links i got it working! the batteries were dead in mine, so i had a few problems getting setup. but the rb3 driver and loopbe1 worked and i was playing on my LM1 software. couldn't figure out what all the buttons did initially, but the touchpad is modulation and holding the buttom next to it made it pitchbend

i also plugged a keystation mini 32 via usb and it recognised that at the same time

it's a bargain for £8

Anyone know what cables I would need to get this running on android? I'm look at g-stomper studio as a potential output.
