Lycamobile 4G "Unlimited" SIM Only £12 a month - 500 min, unlimited texts and "unlimited" data (fair usage of 10GB, then slower speeds)

This is my first post so forgive me if I haven't shown the deal as well as the seasoned HUKDers!

I have been currently looking at SIM-only deals, wanting to avoid the 24 months tie-in of contracts as average data consumption is bound to change massively in that time.

Lycamobile which is a MVNO, mainly known for its cheap international calling rates, working off O2's signal, is one of the first to offer 4G and seem to have a great deal, I'll let you all decide! I think the bundles work a bit like pay as you go but can do an auto-renew as far as I am aware, so is as such a 30-day rolling.

It has:
- 500 UK minutes
- unlimited texts and
- "unlimited" 4G data

While 3G/4G is capped at 10GB monthly data, this is one of the highest caps I have seen and will still allow you some albeit slow internet afterwards in case of emergency!

More of the deals, under the UK plan tab, and the T&C can be found at:
lycamobile.co.uk/en/…les

"Unlimited usage is subject only to a variation of speed from 4G/3G to 2G for usage beyond 10GB per month per SIM."

Also £12 a month for those who like to chat: 1000mins, unlimited texts, 2GB national data.

Would love to hear some input from the community, haven't seen a deal like this especially since Virgin have removed "unlimited" for non-Media customers as far as I am aware.

good deal if it reduced from 4g to 3g then I would vote hot but 2g would iritate me if I ever had to use it..

I agree that it is not ideal but I have seen plenty of deals on here recently that cap or even cut off at far lower allowances, I feel like for the average person 10gb is more than enough, especially with WiFi at home or work etc.

Lyca 4G does not work with Galaxy S4,S5, HTC and Iphone 5. Only phone that works with Lyca 4G is Galaxy S3 LTE. A total rip off!!! Stay away

I didn't realise so did a quick Google and it would appear that they're finalising carrier updates for a few phones for 4G and should be done soon! I think it is important to remember that this is still a very high allowance data plan with reasonable minutes too. I would hope it is only a matter of time before 4G is fully rolled out and it becomes even better value for EVERYONE.

Never knew Lyca was o2 based, heat added.

10GB is unlimited now, oh dear. Hot for the price, though.

No tethering either. What is the point of it?

is it a 30 contract?

The wording is very vexing, why say unlimited when it's patently not? But regardless this is very good usage for £12 a month on a rolling deal. Heat from me.

Do other UK networks still charge for making calls to Lyca numbers even if you have free UK minutes? Thanks

unlimited + fair usage = 10gb then slower speeds?
i can live with that

Only if you're on T-Mobile on an old pre 2012 plan.

No matter what anyone tells you, no network has ever charged to call lyca mobile apart from T-Mobile. However they stopped doing this on their new plans due to complaints. So it's free to call lyca mobile numbers. But if you're on T-Mobile just make sure you signed up after 2012.

can you tether ??

Posted a number of times before. Didn't realise Tmobile no longer charged.

Would still recommend people take 3's Ultimate Internet SIM 200:

All-you-can-eat data
200 minutes
5,000 texts

Also three offer their 'Feel at Home' for international travellers

Thanks for the clarification, I feel there is a lot of scaremongering surrounding lyca which, whilst I don't think it has the great customer service (no network really does), is a bit unfair, given that it was T-mobile playing up.

I think I may put my money where my mouth is and order..

Unlimited.

It's the 24 month contract handset plans that are restricted to 2GB.

I haven't tried Lyca myself but I know people who are more than happy with it.

As it's pay as you go you can always switch back if it doesn't work out for you.

Really? Are you with T-Mobile or a different network?

Have you rang T-Mobile to see why you're being charged?

If you joined before Feb 2012 then you will be charged for the following prefixes which include lyca.

If you joined after feb 2012 then lyca should be free and you'll only be charged for these prefixes.

You sure you're not on an old plan? Were you and existing customer with T-Mobile before feb 2012?

If not I'd read my post above and see if the number prefixes youre calling match up to the ones in the pdf.

Get a grip on reality!

For someone who doesn't use minutes that much this looks great considering its 4G

Cold for the limited unlimited limitation.

As ahmedcentral has pointed out there is only one true unlimited Internet and that is on 3. I'm 20 months in on a 2 year contract and I have never been contacted about excessive use. Truly unlimited, and I will be staying with them.

Agreed! 3 Mobile is truly unlimited.

A good month I can get 20gig down no complaints.

I know someone who has nearly had 100 gig down through 3 mobile. I won't tell you what he was doing though. ;-)

I read that the Three plan is limited tethering - can anyone confirm this? Reference knowyourmobile.com/thr…ing

Thanks - sorry I'm still a little new to the UK mobile scene (have had some very bad experiences including with Lyca mobile too); is this something that's easily obtained or is it one of the hard to get plans? I went to Three (I have the 4G Nexus 2013 tablet) and they put me on a 10gig fixed data 4G plan for mobile devices; it doesn't have calls, the Nexus can't make them. They claimed that it wouldn't work with a phone SIM but I'm not sure how reliable this claim was; is this type of SIM above usable with all types of devices?

No. The One Plan will only work in a phone.

They sold you a data SIM card which is for tablets/mobile broadband devices.

You need a phone to get the one plan with unlimited tethering.

Ahmed, you seem to know everything about mobiles. Does "All you can eat data" allow tethering on 3? I have just tried calling them and been on hold (on a sales line) for 5 mins before I hung up. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it was with the old plans but now they block tethering unless you pay extra for it.

Depends what you buy.

If you buy their contract handset plans (24 month with phone) then AYCE includes 2GB of tethering.
If you buy their "One Plan" SIM Only plan (1 month/12 month without phone) for £20/£23pm then it includes AYCE with unlimited tethering.

The 2GB tethering cap is just on the contract handset plans for now but i expect to see it on SIM Only plans soon enough.
