Is this the OS to get if hackingtoshing?

Great bit of kit and originally used it for upgrade from Leopard. However, after a hard drive failure I was able to install it on a brand new hard drive without any previous Mac OS installed. Then used the brilliant Time Machine to take me exactly back to where I was before the original Hard Drive failed. I mistakenly assumed that this was just for upgrading from Leopard, but pleasantly surprised that it gave the full install. Good price.

Never used OSX before but have bought the Dell Vostro i7 last week and wanted to know if I could dual boot with this? Dell has Win7.

Got this running on my Dell mini 10v dual boot with Windows 7, dead easy to do check out www.mydellmini.com for guides and any advice you need. Good price too.

You're not allowed to install this on non-Apple hardware.

Yeah you're not ALLOWED, but its definitley possible. who reads EULAs anyways :whistling:

Istalled this on my hackintosh a while back. Runs fine. Combine with premium hardware, you get apple build quality (or superiour imo as I built it, not some 12 year old kid in shanghai ) and latest hardware for dell like prices.
Still £22 too much for what is essentially a service pack, but good price compared to elsewhere, so not voted.

You're also not allowed to install it on more than one Mac...but I bet theres a small amount of people that listen to that one :whistling:

Will this do a full installation or do you have to have an OSX already? You mention it is essentially a service pack so wondered.

It is only a service pack if you examine it superficially. Virtually all the rewrites are under the skin and they are pretty substantial. For most users, they will only come into their own once developers take advantage of the features.

I like the fact that I can run both 32 and 64 bit kernels on my hackintoshes - including the Atom based Revo; something that none of my genuine Apple computers is capable of doing.

Over priced by £21.76. As I'm not ALLOWED install it on the machine I built, but must make myself stupider by getting someone else to build it..

so cold for me..

I got this from Play.com a couple of weeks back.
Installed it on my Dell mini 10v using this guide:
osx.mechdrew.com/gui…tml

Very easy job. Wonderful OS.

This is Amazon's standard price for this.

If you keep checking it does drop a couple more quid now and again.

might be stupid to ask!...can we use this on pc?

remember, you don't actually "buy" software, only license it. which means, if you don't agree to the license you don't need to use it!

liken it to: if you were renting out a house and putting a condition on the lease that tenants cannot have pets/have parties/smoke inside, then people get pissy because they want to use your house but not play by your rules.

also you can actually build a cheap computer that apple actually allows you to install osx on to...

the price isnt fantastic, as a previous poster pointed out this is the standard amazon price and it does dip cheaper than this fairly regularly

you can using hackintosh instrucctions, but since you would be breaking the license, you are essentially paying to pirate...

I nearly bought a Dell Mini 10v when they were briefly reduced to £140 a few days ago. I dithered because I already have an AAO (Linux) and wasn't sure I could hackintosh the Dell mini. Although I missed out on the deal, it's good to know that the Dell Mini 10v is ripe for a hackintosh.

Next time they're going cheap, I'll get one for sure.

Easy to do mate like I said the members on the forum are really helpful if you get stuck but the guides are easy enough. Well worth £140 I paid £250+ ages ago.

I'd reccomend dual booting it with Windows 7 just for compatibilitys sake.

This was £20.50 when I checked on Monday night. When I checked again on Tuesday night to order it went back up to £22.76. Still a good price though for OSX86 install

This will actually only install on Intel hardware (no good for older macs)

Yes. Log on to Nectar.com and click on the link to Amazon (it's in the "Collect Points" section).

I have a disused Intel P4 (1GB ram) machine. Can anyone guide me as to how I can install this on it. I don't mind losing windows XP on it.

Intel P4 probably too slow anyway.
OSX will only run on certain hardware/chipsets you need to read some of the guides
already mentioned to check if what you have matches.

Just about to vote this hot,for no other reason than just become aware of a hackintosh, man that has me ROFLMAO and all the others in a similar vein!
I'm lovin' it,lovin' it,lovin' it]http//i6…jpg:w00t:

So, techy question: can you install OSX on a virtual machine? Like VMWare or Virtual PC?

I did a hackintosh about a year ago but couldn't get on with the user interface, but I'd like to give it another try. I sold my Dell Mini so would like to build a virtual machine...

Thanks.

Yes, can be used for Hackingtoshing. I bought this last October and has been running as my primary OS since then, I had Leopard for about a year before that. It works great, and I have it setup with Chameleon bootloader so I can load up Windows from a second hard drive when I need to.

If anyone is considering using it on a PC make sure you read up on hardware compatibility. There's a decent ]Hardware Compatibility List on ]OSX86.

I ended up buying wireless USB adpater because my PCI card was incompatible. Took me a while to get 5.1 audio setup but everything else was straightforward. Plus I found that it was well worth the hassle. I understand theres a lot of fanboys for both, but I prefer OSX and its applications, but still use Windows when I need to aswell.

Down to £20.42 now!!

I find it hard to believe that admins are allowing this thread to turn into a discussion of something which is basically illegal?

And for those of you considering using this software on non-apple hardware I shouldn't bother as Apple has disabled updates for your machines and this 10.6.0 version is full of glitches including one which can wipe all your data when switiching to a guest profile!

If you bought a PC instead of a Mac try running Windows 7? - It's all you deserve! :whistling:

Even better price now too

Technically you are not allowed to install the WINDOWS version of Safari on non-Apple hardware too, but everyone ignores that. Or rather, the 3 people who use Safari on Windows ignore that.
