In some ways apple have created their own problem as the M1 Air and Mac Mini are so good for the price. I totally agree. I managed to get the 13 inch Pro for £900 new but it’s definitely not worth the extra at normal RRP unless you are using for video editing or sustained multi threaded workloads (in which case nowadays you should be looking at this model or mac studio instead!).

Agreed. Advantages under sustained load but even then there’s a pad hack by removing the screws off the base of an Air which will sort that out.

It’s a nice problem to have for apple because ultimately the cost to make another change to the design of the chip to manufacture performance difference isn’t worth it for them especially looking at the quantity they sell their laptops at. That’s just wasting profit needlessly and devalues the chip and brand imo. Plus they needed to get developers and co on board. Their intervention and new product line has changed the industry for the better. We can visibly see just how much Intel was stalling over the years with us before AMD came along and now everyone is working at max capacity to give us, the consumer, the absolute best.

The cannibalism of the 13 Pro model line is real and pretty sad in a way to me because the price difference is so huge from the Air to this new 14 inch Pro line up. Though it’s easier to justify with so much more new stuff.

I got it for a bit less via Very but only £50 with cash back and to be honest I’d pay the £50 more if I’d have seen it to get it from Costco. It’s also the sweet spot for the 14 inch model (bar maybe 32GB) as you get great performance and battery. Higher 14 inch Max models thermal throttle and have worse battery. If you want the Max chip need the 16 inch really.

Never felt the need for anything more and I’ve been able to sit tight on getting a dongle which really doesn’t cost that much or is that much of an inconvenience for a casual user like myself. Most things are on the cloud and on email. I would recommend the Air. I’ve got the pro and it’s nice an all but the Air is significantly cheaper, has the same single core rapid performance of even the M1 ultra and is just as customisable. Sounds great with the speakers. Mics just as good I would say. Don’t listen too much to the marketing crap. Apple wouldn’t sell a compromised experience in their laptop range to this extent. The extra 100 nits between the pro and the air can’t really be seen tbh. Touch Bar is nice to use, I can’t lie but needed extra customisation.

This isn’t that Pro. Whole different level to the Air or Pro 13 performance wise and screen wise. Especially this 10 core model. (edited)

I wasn’t referring to the 14 inch pro in this deal. I was referring to why I would recommend the MacBook Air and relating to my own experiences with the MacBook 13 Pro.

Obviously yes. Totally different ball game with this 14 inch Pro with the screen upgrade but not with the CPU. Single core it’s on par with the standard M1. It’s very only showing advantage in multi core performance testing and applications like multi core.

My point is that I bought a MacBook Pro over 7 yrs ago for under £1k with a retina screen and the same priced model now has similar specs and no upgrade in specs. So to achieve any kind of improvement I'd have to fork out double the cost which never used to be the case and certainly isn't the case with other manufacturers

I've been fine with 2 ports. I even got this 4k@60hz display port dongle with a USB-C port and power passthrough but haven't really had to use it, sorry can only see it on Ebay USA just now. There is also a full size DP version. I wouldn't recommend HDMI for Macs cause it thinks its a TV. (edited)

Sam boat, although I need to resist getting the new air since I only just got the m1 air early last year. it is more than capable for what I need but if the air gets that new screen (I am doubtful it will), it will be hard to resist getting one. I actually quite like the 13" screen but would love that new edge to edge design.

Literally never been an issue for me as I have no need to plug it into anything other than power, I have barely used the second port on mine. I'm fortunate enough to have a monitor that supports power and display over a single usb C, so can get it hooked up to a screen and charging and also have my keyboard and mouse pass through to it with a single usb C port. I bought the MBpro 13 thinking it was more inline with the 14 (i.e. standard function keys). My mistake for not being more up-to-date with their offerings. I bought one on the Amazon warehouse deal. The second I opened it and saw the smart keys at the top and the lack of hdmi port on the side, I returned it. Had it opened for a grand total of 2 minutes.

I really wanted to like the thing. Just cant justify paying 900 pounds for a MB air though. I guess I'll just keep waiting..

Depends on how many times you use ports for a dongle to inconvenience yourself. Me? I hardly ever use them but when I do, it is not a massive issue for me to smack the dongle into the case and leave it there for when I do. The 14-inch line has the convenience of a native set of ports but there is no USB A ports still and there never will be so you still might need some level of the dongle for redundancy purposes as USB C memory sticks are still a premium over USB A.
