What better way to celebrate the new year

Night Glow Flying Lanterns, also known as Sky Lanterns, will add an exciting new element to any event. Their mysterious glow can be seen climbing several miles in the sky for around 20 minutes. Flight ceases when all the fuel has been burnt and the flame subsides then as the air in the lantern cools it will gently float back to the ground for a safe landing. The Lanterns will fly to more than 1,000 meters in altitude, providing an amazing show for all ages.

Cold - 99p in The Works

cold, as as said 99p in Works picked some up the other day

Yes they look nice but what happens when they land? Who clears up the rubbish/debris?
What about the metal frames, do they lie rusting in hedgerows waiting for a small animal to get entangled. I know its not exactly dry at the moment but try not to let them off during a drought will you. Typical of todays society, looks nice, gives an instant hit but lets forget about the consequences... I know I overuse the word but they are a bit chavvy

telegraph.co.uk/new…tml

Poundland have far greater number of stores when compared to The Works. For 1p price difference, still a bargain IMO

anything from poundland by the sounds of it - no doubt she/he would never set foot it in the place

It may cost £1... but whats the real price?

Consumption without obligation... hmm not sure I'd agree to this. Yes its a good deal (follows the guidelines of this site) but I'm certainly free to express an opinion (as you all are) as to the merits or otherwise of this bargain in the same way as i can comment on an item of clothing I think these are a little naff and in some areas can be a little dangerous.

As for staying away from Poundland, I did enter my local store recently and was given the wrong change!

UFO!!.. oh.. no.. wait. its flickering.

i must have said that about 50 times this year...

I was in the back garden at my brother's on boxing day evening having a ciggie and thought I was seeing a UFO. Guess it was one of these? Do they set thatched roofs alight?

Still think you mean celebrate though

They have light bamboo frames and will eventually rot away -

Bit of fun for the kids - worth a pound - or 99p depending which shop you go to.

I can't believe people voted cold over 1p - some people on here are so pathetic sometimes. I honestly wonder why they bother.

:x

Hot deal these will be great for new year thanks op.

But, why should it be voted hot if its more expensive? Voting it cold for that same reason obviously makes far more sense than voting it hot. It seems like there is a growing mentality on this site that everybody HAS to vote everything hot, just to be 'nice'. The amount of crap that is getting hot these days is incredible and waters down the very basis of the site to the point where it becomes almost pointless.

Imho though, I'm fed up of all the poundland postings now.

I love the fact you think them naff.

Who Cares?

You should do

I dropped one on next door's car roof after it left my garden.
Disappeared over the garage, me and the kids dashed out front to see where it had soared off to only to see a lovely bonfire on top of their Hyundai. I whipped it off the roof and ran back to our front door with the smouldering remains.

I would blame the massive acidic pigeon poo that landed on the car roof that night if I were them. Didn't have the gall to check the car in daylight and I never heard anything more about it.
Mind you, we don't have a lot to do with our neighbours except for the Christmas card every year.

a bit of light fun....great deal, as i do not have a works near me but I do have a poundland!
people here need to chill

It's all fun and games till someone loses a cow :\

This thread is funny!

Nasty chavvy litter.

I can't believe people are seriously considering using these in the UK in the middle of winter!!!!

... Just imagine the joy in everyones' faces as a burning mass of fuel and paper gets blown straight into the side of a house/tree/car/person. All we can hope is the rain will put out the fires before they take hold.

It's cold from me!

Being winter the air temperature will be colder which means the lantern will rise faster and further...these should not be let off in anything more than a very light breeze...if all else fails read the instructions.

It's nothing to do with the 'enviro police' blah blah,

Did you not read the link, which states very clearly, that these things have killed farmers livestock, have set fire to thatched roofs, and fields/crops etc?

They are dangerous.

They are only dangerous if not used properly....hot air rises....but idiots still try and use them in a strong breeze which takes them sideways and not upwards.

So is lightning, and has probably killed more people than these things.

There seems to be some cry babies in tonight :-D Maybe all those in thatched roofs should perhaps upgrade, yes? It's not Victorian England anymore. And from what I've read about these, they don't hurtle to the ground like some minute meteor - they glide back down. So the chance of someone getting hit by an object floating down from the sky somewhat like a baloon is ridiculous.

Also, if the fuel is spent on these things - which is why they would fall gracefully back to earth, how is it that they can apparently cause great fires? When a Boeing 747 has to perfom an emergency landing, it dumps the fuel to minimise any potential outbreaks of fire. If these items also have zero fuel - then the same can be said for these.

Cry me a river.

Thank god someone else agrees these things are evil! I can't believe so many people are saying "who cares".

They look pretty, yes, but there are consequences, especially for farmers. The problem is the person setting these things off doesn't get the negative side of things and probably can't think of anyone but themselves.

Sometimes they can come down still burning, which can damage land, crops or property. More often they come down when they've finished burning. The wire/wooden frame can get trapped around an animal's foot, making them lame or worse. Not only is this bad for the animal, it is bad for the farmer and can cost them a lot of money!

They really should be banned. It shouldn't be okay for a bunch of townies to threaten the livelihoods of farmer's and the health of animals just for a few minutes pleasure.
