Barriers are open all the time at the moment to the main concourse toilets, they're finally being refurbished, in fact I think temporary ones may now be open on platform 10, just opposite.

No such thing as free as someone is paying for it. Who's gonna maintained it day in, day out? Do you work for free? Who pays your bills? It will go on the train ticket prices.

Yeah, but it would be nice if you could at least ask first.....

It'll get added on anyway. Train fares are a joke in this country.

Are both gender toilets free?

Altough I plan on using the male toilets today I'm thinking I might choose to identify as a woman tomorrow...but only if it's free.

ahhhh thank god, this means i don't have to worry about all dayer in manchester tomorrow now! went on a pi$$ up in mancester in august last year, got to piccadily to get the train home and reallyyyy needed the toilet. Obviously didn't have the change for the barrier and in my drunken state had my high jumping beer goggles on. Next thing i know i'm waking up in a CT scanner in a manchester hospital. Tried jumping the barrier and obv must have caught my foot, landed on my forehead and knocked myself unconscious, blood everywhere haha! Apologies to anyone that needed those toilets that night, they were shut for quite some time apparently! live and learn

Moral of the story: Don't drink alcohol
Those barriers ain't even high, they are easy to get over. Or you could crouch under

Who maintains the rest of the building (or any other major train station) and how is it paid for? It's paid via the enormous train prices being charged and all expensive shops and restaurants inside the station so the toilets should be included in that. Do you really think that it would increase the price that much? They are simply putting extra cash into their pockets. It may only be 30p or whatever but it all seems a bit pathetic really.

The toilets should always be free as part of a service to the customers.

Either way, prices are going up. Like it or lump it, not much you can do about it. You can stand on your ground & not use it in protest of the increases but what's that gonna get you, we all need to travel from one place to the other. Profits are needed to invest for the future or else what's the point running a business model. The train services are not some charity. If no profit was made or no investment was spent, things will just fall apart. RedmanDealer, have you ever ran your own business out of your own pocket?

But he was drunk so they made money from him by high Alcohol tax, it's the same with smoking

The government knows it kills and puts people in Hospitals but they make a ton of profit from it so a incident now and again Is a small price to earn big money

Apparently, they're not doing a very good job, as in the majority of the modern European countries, fares are considerably lower and trains are more modern, cleaner, and always on time.
I only ever travel to Victoria Station so cold from me as I aren't walking all the way from Victoria to Piccadilly so I can just have a free wee

It's a major train station, a toilet that's free to use should be a basic requirement, you don't go to a restaurant then pay to go for a pee, do you? It's covered by the other costs.

Got a better solution? Go back to renationalisation? Will it improve our railways & solve the problems that everyone want cheap travel? Where is the money going to come from to fund this?

Are you foreign?

Your profile info says "I am from north korea and I am proud" - ( A Bunch of Korean Letters)

Train companies make billions every year, they are funded by the government and charge high prices

Train operators invest little cash but take massive profits do a little research on how much the higher ups make, they make millions per year

Its not me to answer, ask the people who get paid high 5-digit figures or even a lot more, in order to make it work efficiently, but it seem their German, Dutch, Austrian, etc colleagues do a much better job keeping their employees and passengers happy. Their railway its not a charity, either.

Yes please renationalise, East coast is heading that way again. As regards where the money comes from it's out the same pot of cash the Government is bailing out Virgin and Stagecoach with on the east coast line. They get into difficulties and are getting out of their contracts early. Ran at a profit last time taxpayer ended up taking over to keep the service running. No major profits and pay outs to share holders.

Yes, Yes, No. I'm aware of that & increase prices will reflect that.

You honestly think they need to increase train prices to afford a toilet cleaner? Do you think they have 0 profit or something? Or do you work for a train operator / station?

They are. The trick is to not pay and go inside, just pee outside against the wall instead.

Not just, The Toilet Cleaner who will most likely be employed by outside contractors but also other facilities on site. To suggest "toilets should be free" is a far too simple after thought. Never said once they have 0 profit but they are after all a private train operator company on franchise terms. They are not a charity, it's a business. I don't work for or have any connections to the rail network. I have travelled in the past on public transport but also own a car so fully understand that costs have to be paid for.

And where else in this day and age would you be happy to pay for a p*ss? lol
Commuters are already paying over the odds for a poor service, they shouldn't then be gouged on the 'luxury' of using a toilet!

Never paid once in my lifetime to use toilets in train stations. If there was a charge, I'll just go elsewhere. It's very simple, if you don't like paying for toilets, go elsewhere. It's a choice you know & no one is forcing you. No difference to retail stores on-site that charge higher prices to high street stores, no one is forcing you in-store to buy something if you don't like the price. Is that not clear enough?

Then why are you still trying to defend paying to go to the toilet in a train station that's already overcharging for *everything*?

Not defending but find folks who think free is free without knowing that someone is paying for it. Have you ran a business with your own capital? When you apply for jobs, do you go for less money or more money for same role? It's a free market. You don't like paying more, go elsewhere.
