don't get this how people have sockets fail ?

Ordered one. Thanks.

Can't speak for this particular model, but these are useful if you want to add some sockets yourself and then test they're okay or if you have any existing sockets that you think are dodgy. I've come across a few live-neutral reverses and neutral faults in people's homes that my socket tester has identified.

It's not always the sockets themselves that fail, but I've seen some wired up incorrectly. Saw one before where the socket tester indicated a problem because someone pulled an earth cable a bit loose in the fuse box. Another where someone has switched the live and neutral cables near the fuse box.

It is still good to have as it finds faults that may not be local socket related due to having a bad electrician.
Try bad wiring on a oil rig due to some idiot sparky f#####g up.

It isn't about sockets failing, it is about checking that they are wired up the right way ... right now, nevermind when the stuff was installed. (And of course you can use it on extension leads as well as wall sockets.)
Excellent thing to have in your toolbox. Instant testing. Good price.

Just stick something metal in the socket. If you get a shock you know it's working fine.

Very basic, handy for checking your sockets are wired correctly but thats about it.
Something you will probably use only once.

Decent ones by fluke, martindale etc have rcd trip, earth loop ipmedance and earth volt
tests but cost at least 10 times more.

Godspeed

If my sockets looked that weirdy shape and size I'd know things definitely weren't fine. And I'd also wonder where I'm supposed to get a 1940's style plug to go in it.

It's an American socket

That explains why it looks so antiquated.
