Help me out here, how is this better than manually planing a surface? Tell me why I shouldn't buy this tool that I won't use for 5 years?
I use them for different things. The power planes are much quicker (try taking a 2mm cut with a manual one) but the manual ones are more controllable and will give a better surface finish if used correctly.

Heat added, great deal plain and simple.

These are OK. A bit slow and heavy compared to a wired plane, but handy not having a trailing wire wrapping round the wood.
These are light and well balanced and even though I have a new makita corded planer(which I never use) I would pick this everytime.

These are great used it today on oak doors runs fantastic just as good as my mains powered boch planer. I was surprised to see how well these performed. Watch the reviews the makita wins every time and it's great not having a cable. That said I would only go withvthis if you skready gad the makita battery and charger.
