Great price from Manchester, would have booked if it wasn't in university term-time.

All midweek departures in Nov and part Dec. Air France £284
Brum-Jfk is £269 klm/delta

Where?
Do you have a link please?

Good deal. Might consider stocking up on some U.S dollars now.
At that time of year a few Apple products will be out too for those that are early adopters.

Example of current generation when bought directly from Apple
Current UK price of iPad Air £399
Current US rice of iPad Air $499
£1 = c$1.7
iPad could be had for £295. that's a £100 saving!

Yes this post isn't about Apple and you can buy it for around that price now on Amazon/eBay. I'm just highlighting some possible savings. You could apply that to almost any product that works out cheaper there. Especially with current strong £.
There was a BBC article about people flocking to the states for shopping. Why not just buy the currency now and then go when flights are cheaper like this OP.

Because unless you're psychic and can foresee the pound weakening against the dollar, there's no logical reason to covert now as opposed to before you go. Leave it in GBP in a high interest savings account.

So is this direct? i.e no change over in europe somewhere?

Pah! There is no such thing as a high interest savings account at the moment. You're better off spending your money and enjoying life.

Exactly what George wants you to do. How else can he inflate away our mountain of debt?

Yes there is, I'm currently getting 5%.

Not that I see how having a stash of US dollars while you're in the UK is particularly thrilling or "living life"!
