I always thought I'd prefer the original language, but with animé I find I want to watch the art.
Subtitles just end up distracting me.
If you know Japanese, then great. I don't, so these dubbed versions are perfect.
If you're happy with subs, then great too

It honestly just depends on the dub, really.

For instance, the original Akira English dub was great, but the redone version (about 10/15 years ago?) was nowhere near as good, and so the Japanese is better there.

But for stuff like Ghost in the Shell, I have always preferred the voice casting for the Major, because a lot of the Japanese ones tend to make her sound like a little girl, compared to the more badass woman of the English dubs.

Cowboy Bebop's English voice cast are great too.

Obviously, you tend to want things to be authentic, and it's hard to translate a hysterically screaming Japanese policeman into "Hey! You! Stop!" and feel like it's got the same impact, but there are some pretty good English dubs out there. Studio Ghibli set the bar quite high as well in much of their later stuff.

Very well put. We're finding some of the dubbing for non-English language Netflix (non-animé) to be quite frustrating, particularly where it doesn't convey the context well.
