1996 was the year that Manic Street Preachers made the move from being a cult band in Britain to a universally popular one. Their fourth album, 'Everything Must Go' was admired by both fans and critics. The record produced four top ten hits in the UK. The first of these, 'A Design For Life' went to No. 2 in the UK Charts and was awarded an Ivor Novello song-writing award - possibly the first of its kind to deal with the themes of class struggle and the erosion of the welfare state.
