Manuka Honey at Aldi

so Manuka honey's pretty expensive. But apparently it's great for coughs and sore throats. it's getting to that time when germ warfare kicks off in our house (joys of 2 school kids). Imagine the joy my purse felt when I stumbled upon this in Aldi. £3.99 for 250g of Active 10+.

yes it is

I always buy it from Aldi its a great price

Is this the right strength to keep away colds etc ???

Its can even been used as a wound treatment

yeah i swear by honey, all these people that reach for medicine are crazy,i have honey every day for the last 5 years without fail.
i have not had a cold in the last 5 years also,
i had a swollen/sore gum due to tooth and guess what i drank(honey and water).

things like this and spirulina, flax are essentials in life.
honey also helped stop my girlfriend getting acid reflux

Manuka honey is great on wounds. I had a bike accident and my knuckles were really cut up, and wouldnt heal properly as it was in an akward place. a couple of days with some honey on and they were fully healed - amazing. i now try and have a spoon a day.

All these things are true for me and I rarely eat honey. Old grannies swear a tot of gin each day helps them live longer, but as we only hear of the ones that live we tend to believe it to be true. Food for thought (not necessarily honey).

A fictional rating in order to make you think this honey has medical properties and is worth more than it is.

This is a fantastic product look it up on the net. This is also a great price. We have been buying it from Holland and Barrett much more expensive. Thanks for this great info. We are just off to Aldi!!

Maybe your tooth went gammy with all that honey? :-)

Manuka certainly helped my sister when she was having chemo. Helped stop mouth cracking etc.

B&M have Honeydew & Blackcurrant 300g for 99p at the moment. Apparently that sort of honey is good for digestion. The Manuka is good for healing/fighting bad stuff.

Honey's got some useful properties but I wouldn't bet this is any more effective as a remedy than any other decent honey.

If this honey helps any of your minor non-specific, self-limiting illnesses I have some awesome magic beans for sale...

I have never heard of honey having ratings! What is meant by 10+ - 10 what?

Good for thrush too I've read

Does this have the UMF® trademark?

It is the scale of the healing properties.+25 is used in Hospitals as a remedy against infections.

Thanks

the rating is the activity equivalent of a phenol solution on killing staphylococcus bacteria (specific strain). so umf10+ is the same as a 10% solution of phenol. only measured if called umf. other honey people have jumped on the band wagon and labelled with numbers that mean nothing.

active ingredient in real Manuka is methylglyoxal. 10+ is around 150mg/kg.

this being simply active 10 could relate to anything and may not be active as you think.

whether manuka actually does anything is a different argument.

It tastes great but it's just another honey - why should it bee more expensive!?

It's cheap at the side of the road in New Zealand :o)

I've eaten bread every day for the last five years and have never had a cold in that time. Anybody want to buy my magic bread?

Honestly, the logic of some people on here amazes me. Even though ACTUAL scientific research has been carried out on this stuff, and has shown to be no better than standard honey, people still swear by it's magical properties.

It's like saying..."I've read a newspaper everyday for last 5 years and have never had cancer in all that time, therefore, newspapers prevent cancer!

This honey actually costs £1.99 + £2 gullible tax.

Anyone want to buy some magic beans for £10?

Any such reports on bread or newspapers?

Didn't think so.

I only get manuka honey with this UMF® trademark and avoid 'active' labelled honey, seems like a con to me; especially when they start getting +16 and higher

I may be wrong, and sometimes I am, but I believe the constant lick of newspaper print when turning the pages may cause cancer! aniline or something....

I can vouch for the amazing powers of Manuka Honey too, my arm fell off after an accident trying to climb a giant beanstalk. I applied the honey to the stump and by the very next day my arm had miraculously grown back!

Actually new Zealand are doing research into the healing properties of Manukha honey as the tree grows there and it's already used in the hospitals over there it's also used in the reptile world to heal injuries!

Yeah things from plants and nature are a joke for healing and medicine

any one want some cheap willow bark extract and processed poppies ?

Not enough manuks in it

Used it to treat my eczema and wound after surgery, is fantastic. Heals up ulcers faster than steroid ointment and prevents infection.

Yes, please buzz off!

Seriously though, this is a great price when compared to other retailers.
Refuse to be drawn into the medical debate - its a hot deal whatever your opinion is of the properties of Manuka.

Some people clearly can't open their tiny minds o the fact that there are actually natural things in this world which are effective in treating illness. Small minds...

How about Maggots and Leeches used daily across the globe for harvesting turnips?

Bear in mind, most of the research that has been carried out on Manuka honey is mainly on bacteria resistant to antibiotics; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Group A Streptococci and Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The research that is currently being carried out is looking at how manuka honey interacts with the three types of bacteria mentioned above which commonly infest wounds. Not what some people here are suggesting, cure for the common cold, acid reflux, eczema, and so on.

And anyway, for example, there is no magic cure for the common cold. There is no treatment that will shorten the length of the infection. Treatment aims to ease symptoms whilst your immune system clears the virus. The common cold is a viruse and not even antibiotics will kill viruses, so are of no use for colds. And manuka honey definitely isn't.

Yes, it is true that manuka honey is included in modern licensed wound-care products around the world and is used in the treatment of wound-care in many hospitals. Yet the mechanisms of its action are not fully understood. So the above claims some people are making are unfounded, anecdotal.

Manuka honey isn't a cure all as most people appear to believe. It's mostly marketing hype and is also based on perceived ancient wisdom. There is no strong scientific evidence to prove that this works above what I've already mentioned. Most of the evidence cited on this thread is individual anecdotal evidence. This is not how science works.

It's not small minded.

Drugs and medicines have empirical evidence to back up the claims that they are effective. They undergo rigorous testing and have to be scientifically proven to work, and that they are also safe to use. Any side effects that they cause are documented and understood and will be taken into consideration by the doctor prescribing the treatment.

Alternative and most natural treatments do not go through these procedures.

And anyway, the term natural is an obscure one.
