Apply for Marriage Allowance
Marriage Allowance lets you transfer £1,150 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner.

This can reduce their tax by up to £230 every tax year (6 April to 5 April the next year).

To benefit as a couple, you need to earn less than your partner and have an income of £11,500 or less. Your partner’s income must be between £11,501 and £45,000 (£43,000 in Scotland) for you to be eligible.

You can backdate your claim to include any tax year since 5 April 2015 that you were eligible for Marriage Allowance.

Before you apply
This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).

You need you and your partner’s National Insurance numbers.

You also need a way to prove your identity. This can be one of the following:

  • the last 4 digits of the account that your child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid into
  • the last 4 digits of an account that pays you interest
  • details from your P60
  • details from any of your 3 most recent payslips
  • your passport number and expiry date
You’ll get an email confirming your application.

Agreed it is a shame that my wife who stays at home looking after the kids, that i cant have her tax free allowance as we are a family unit.

She accepted that you have crabs, she sounds like an understanding sort

Ridiculous.

My partner and I have been together for 15 years, but don't qualify as a family unit because of a piece of paper derived from a religious ceremony?

Get in the sea.

Not that she/I would qualify for this anyway. Not the point though

She left me for a young fit builder .i will claim as he does does not need this and we are not divorced. Is it one claim for each

I've already got one offer. There are some desperate dudes out there

I put in for this last year but we never got anything in backdated money

That’s not much of a compensation for what you go through in a marriage!

My wife earn less than £11,500 this year due to maternity leave, will I be able transfer my tax?

Alexa, What's your NI number?

Alexa, What's your NI number?

She said "I don't have a national insurance number"
Just tried it.

ALL married couples should be eligable, not just those who work part time!

I get my husband's allowance, have done for last couple of years. Had no idea I was eligible until I saw this page a year ago and had it backdated. Still wish he had a decent job instead tho!

Your wife has to go through the process outlined in the OP and transfer it to you. You can't claim it from her.

This is a common mistake - the person who wants to transfer their allowance (husband or wife) is the one who has to contact HMRC, you can't claim it on your spouse's behalf

HI.Same happened to me.Rang them up and had money within 10 days.
