It's one of those stupid figures bandied about to persuade the gullible to shell out on surge-protected extension leads because suddenly if you don't have one your computer will go bang within the next three milliseconds.

Funny how we used to be able to survive perfectly well without these, isn't it?

Anyway, "33000 amps" means very little - it is not a measure of the energy of a spike, which would be a more sensible thing to quote. I could imagine you can easily generate 33000 amps for an extremely short time - no nuclear power station required.

to be fair, I know of a few devices that was destroyed because of a power surge from a lightning strike that one of these would protect from.

Hot price though. Need a sensible setup for my AV stuff - got multi socket cubes coming out of multi socket cubes coming out of a power strip thing...
Reserved myself one at Wimbledon Argos!

I have all my AV kit on a similar 10-way to this. Some people comment on how unsafe it must be but they clearly don't have an understanding of how much a kettle/iron etc can draw from a single socket - 5x+ what my entire AV set-up uses at once!

Does anyone know if this has individual switches that can turn each plug on/off? Thanks

What's adaptor sockets?

Not really - you know a few devices that would probably still have been destroyed with a power surge from a lightning strike if this were connected. :-D

Pretty obvious from the picture that it doesn't.

If you look carefully at the picture you can see the bottom two sockets have more space for adaptor block type plugs.

this piece of gargbage wont protect your equipment from a lightning strike

with a comment like that u should back it up

No, I think that these companies making outrageous and misleading claims about the abilities of their products should back it up. Have you looked at the thickness of a lightning conductor?

well ive got the belkin ones and when ever one goes they replace it no questions asked...... so surely thats better than nothing? at this price its similiar to a normal extension lead.....

What do you mean they go? Does this mean they've saved the things connected to them? Who can say?

I have no objection to people buying these on the merit of being extension leads - expecting them to perform miracles in the presence of unspecified "surges" should not be a reason to buy, though. Do they also protect you from the bogeyman under the bed?

I'm using one right now (which I unfortunately paid around £25 for a few months back) & it's really quite good.

So at this price, it's a steal. Hot!

i reserved this at my local store but forgot the reservation number and its not in my email!

anyone know any way of getting the number? or can i go in tomorrow and say to them ive forgotten the number?

I have a Masterplug extension cassette with RCD....

Its been reliable until the other week when a tradesman at the house went to use it, he said it just went out with a bang....

Anyone know what might have cause that, it doesn't want to work anymore thats for sure.

It's this product, toolshopdirect.co.uk/ite…34C

Voted hot. But beware of using the master on/off switch on top of the unit as it's flimsy and lasted only 4 months.

Why are people questioning this unit and others' functionality? They offer £3000 coverage if it doesn't work. Sounds like they're sure.

if he was using something with a high power kick that could of done it, like a circular saw or angle grinder...

Did he have the reel fully unwould as the max load is variable depending on length unwound?

Also he should of used his own one anyway

Thanks first. So, do you mean the only difference is that there are more space around these two socks and the socks are just normal ones?

I quizzed him and he said he had nothing plugged into it, he just plugged it into the socket and swtiched it on.

I have run all sorts off it, powerful karcher washer, makita circular saw and grinder, ryobi compound mitre saw etc ,all with no problems.

I would have thought it would have been more than rated to deal with these sort of tools and with me it had been but it went bang with him.

And yes he should have used his own one but he is a tradesman...or so called, had them in before, plumber was similar he had a duff transformer so he stole a fuse from my other halfs laptop plug to see if it was that without asking or telling.

In the end I had to give him tools, even his wallboard saw was like a banana......he got chased out not long after caught him about to cut half the plasterboard out when was no need to.

Finally i can get rid of the metres and metres of extensions round the back of the TV

That's just the start of it - it's as full of holes as a Swiss cheese.

They could turn round and say they need you to pay for a wiring inspection to prove that your wiring complies.

They could turn round and say that the surge was longer than 500 microseconds and how would you be able to prove otherwise? How could they prove it was greater than 500 microseconds? That looks like an unfair contract term if ever I saw one!

If you've opened your PC to install some RAM, they can say it has been "tampered with".

It specifically excludes damage by lightning! Judging by previous comments in this thread, this is not understood.

Need I go on?

I had never read the small print on these things before but it just confirms what I suspected all along - it's one long get-out clause.
